THE COURIER-JOURNAL TIMES, LOUISVILLE, KY. SUNDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 10, 1971 Tennessee-Martin blasts Murray 41-0 West, Holmes, Jones, Whitten help pile it on in runaway The win was Martin's second against two losses while Murray is now 2-2. A bad pass from center was responsible for Martin's first touchdown, which came at 11:43 in the second quarter on an eight-yard run by West. Murray had the ball fourth down on Special to The Courier-Journal MARTIN, Term. Marvin West, a tailback, and fullback Nate Holmes scored two touchdowns apiece last night to lead University of Tennessee Martin Branch to an overwhelming 41-0 victory over Murray State.

its own 32 but the snap sailed over the punter's head and landed on the Murray five. After a three-yard loss, West scampered in for the initial score. The only other score of the first half came a few minutes later. Holmes four-yard run capped a 42-yard drive that sent Martin to the dressing room with a 14-0 halftime lead. Murray fumbled the first play from scrimmage to start the second half, Martin recovering on the Murray 19.

Three plays later, West took a pitchout at the two and took it in for Martin's third touchdown. The Tennessee team increased it to 27-0 after Don Jones intercepted a pass by Tom Pandolfi at the Martin 28 and ran the rest of the way. That made it 27-0, which was the score at the end of the third quarter. Murray will be on the road for its next game when it battles Middle Tennessee Saturday afternoon at Murfreesboro. 1 W-sSk ft Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. Sixth-ranked Alabama laced error prone Vanderbilt 42-0 in a Southeastern Conference football game last night as tailback Johnny Musso broke one SEC record and moved closer to another. Musso broke the conference record for career touchdowns by running untouched for a 17-yard score in the first quarter. It gave him 32 career TD's, breaking the standard of 31 set by Georgia's Charlie Trippi in the 1940s. Musso, who only played three quarters, also ran a two-point converson in the third quarter, giving him a career total of 194 points 10 short of the SEC record of 204 set by Georgia Tech's Billy Loth-ridge between 1961- and 1963.

After Musso's touchdown, the Crimson Tide, now 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the SEC, made it 10-0 on Billy Davis' 33-yard field goal with 4:33 left in the first half. Another field goal, a 26-yarder by Gary Gantt with 12 seconds left in the first half, made it 13-0. (AP) Last night's exhibition pro basketball game between the Baltimore Bullets and the New York Nets was postponed when water seeped onto the court at the Long Island Arena.

The Arena, the Nets' old home and the current residence of the Long Island Ducks of the Eastern Hockey League, was covered with a layer of ice. The basketball court was placed of top of the ice, but their was no buffer in between. Consequently, the melting ice leaked onto the court. A couple of years ago, the Nets had to forfeit to the Kentucky Colonels in the final game of the ABA Eastern Division semifinals because of a similar situation. Last night's postponement has been reset for tonight at Island Gardens in West Hempstead, N.Y., the Nets' present home site.

Bjorkluitd betters record MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Gary Bjork-lund, Big Ten cross country champion the past two years, led Minnesota to a 22-37 victory over Wisconsin in a Big Ten meet yesterday. Bjorklund, a junior who won the NCAA outdoor six-mile championship last summer, set a course record of 28 minutes 56 seconds for the six mile chase. 42, Tou Pav On For Thn first downs, squared its record at 2-2.

It has lost to two Mid-American foes. It scored one touchdown in each of the first three quarters and added two in the last period on a 12-yard run by Juenger over right guard with 13:45 to go and a Juenger-to-Bob Allen 11-yard pass with 8:13 left. But the superiority of Ohio and coach Bill Hess was obvious from the outset. Kentucky could have pulled out carbon copies of nightmares from the recent and distant past for all it accomplished in the first half except for one thing. UK scored.

Of course, it was down 14-0 by the time Mike Fanuzzi cracked over right tackle into the end zone in the second quarter, but at least the home team came back with a sustained drive. UK started out well, as usual. It won the toss for the fifth straight game and picked up three first downs. Then it bogged down, as usual. With Bernie Scruggs at the controls and a fourth-and-11 from the Ohio 35, UK elected to run and Scruggs got only seven yards around end.

But after Kentucky held Ohio on the visitors' first series (after one first down), it was time for the horror show. On a third down play Scruggs fumbled and Ohio middle guard Scott Robinson recovered on the UK 22. Scruggs would not play again the rest of the first half. On Ohio's five-play touchdown drive following the fumble, after Juenger carried the first three times for minimal yardage, Gary raced four yards around end to UK's 9-yard-line on a fourth-and-one play. Then he trotted nine up the middle for the first score.

And it was easy, Kentucky half-heartedly arm-tackling all the way. Timepiece, Not The Time ii iook io make it! Continued from Page 1 of the defense. "There's no reason the defense should play like that," Ray said. "Only two of our front eight haven't played before. Either we've got to be the lousiest coaches in America or something very strange is going on.

"These kids were more fired up for this game than any. We worked all week on the quarterback keeper and on Gary 'reading' a running play back to the inside." rt Then he added, "Maybe it's this. Maybe they've lost their confidence, and now probably figure they are just not worth a darn. But they act like they don't want to play. They just start guessing.

"Our offense wasn't any great shakes. But you expect young kids to be a little scatterbrained. Maybe the offense wasn't doing everything right, but every time they came in there they were seven more points down. "I'm embarrassed and befuddled about what to do," he concluded, rubbing his head harder. "But we have to do something." Juenger, converted from the flanker position he played as a sophomore to the quarterback position he played in high school, deftly executed the Ohio Bobcats' ground-and-Gary-geared attack to the point where the Kentucky defense was left in utter disrepair.

In fact, it may not only have been UK's worst defensive effort of the season but it's worst in Ray's three years here. Juenger, when he wasn't pitching out or slipping a delayed handoff to Gary, bis junior classmate, kept the ball 22 times for 104 yards rushing. When he did pass, it was such a shock he completed 4 of 7 for 43 yards and a touchdown. When he was giving the ball to Gary, the head-busting back ripped off 164 yards in 36 trips. And Gary was just yesterday coming back to full strength after a first-game injury.

All in all, it made one wonder what the future holds for UK. Now 1-4 for the season and going steadily downhill, Ray's team must next face Louisiana State here next Saturday night and then visit unbeaten Georgia the week after. Where will it all end?
