(4th Chestnut) Ph. 583-3694 By WILLIAM MOOTZ Curltr-Journl Critic It takes a lot of brash nerve to reduce the creation of the state of Israel to the old Hollywood cowboy-and-Indians heave-ho. But Melville Shavelson pulls the stunt off in his "Cast A Giant Shadow," which came to the United Artists yesterday.

"Cast A Giant Shadow" is a phony and noisy bore. The type isn't uncommon to movie houses. But "Cast a Giant Shadow" also fills a viewer with a rising mood of anger because all its shallow heroics mask one of the 20th Century's epic tales of heroism. Dressed In Cliches "Cast A Giant Shadow" purports to be the screen biography of David "Mickey" Marcus, a native of New York, a graduate of West Point, a lawyer, and an officer in World War II, who lost his life training Israeli soldiers in the fight for their country's independence. Marcus was eventually appointed a general in Israel's army the first general that country had had in 2,000 years, according to the screenplay.

Such a story is, of course, the material from which legends are made. One can easily understand Shavelson's eagerness EMENT jjj DAY! 1 to commit it to film. But Shavelson's constant willingifess to dress such a tale in the sorriest of screen cliches, and the hollowest of romantic clap-trap, is baffling. Such a figure as Marcus must have been and his contribution to the fighting power that led Israel to proud victory surely deserve greater respect than this. I guess, however, that such an attitude must seem hopeless idealism on the part of the knowing men who make movies.

They long have contorted great fiction to the contours of what their murky little minds conceive to be the average movie goer's mentality. If great fiction, why not the lives of heroes? What are a few facts, after all, when they are sacrificed in the cause of cinematic entertainment? What, indeed! Still, the facts are sacrificed in vain for "Cast A Giant Shadow." It stirs no interest, plumbs no emotional depths, mounts no thrilling climaxes with the magnificent material it had at hand. It simply glugs along sluggishly for two hours and 22 minutes. Desperation Indicated There is evidence that Shavelson felt a certain desperation about the static mess he was turning out in "Cast A Giant Shadow." At least, he paid for the likes of Frank Sinatra, Yul Brynner and John Wayne to appear in brief, insignificant roles. The trio of Wayne, Sinatra and Brynner is intended to spell box-office insurance.

When a movie fan sees names like theirs on a marquee, he's supposed to come all undone and rush for tickets. Well, maybe so. But they look and sound like tired has-beens in "Cast A Giant Shadow." Still, they are a relief from the wide expanse of gritted teeth that Kirk Douglas uses as his principal prop for acting. Douglas goes around yelling that Israelis must pull together in order to have a fighting chance against the Arabs. I kept wishing they'd hurry up and start consolidating their commands just to shut Douglas up.

But Douglas is a hard actor to suppress. He makes even love scenes with the lovely likes of Senta Bcrger and Angie Dickinson seem like exercises in dental hygiene. Some day, the movies may do justice to the birth of Israel. "Exodus" came close. "Cast A Giant Shadow" misses by a country mile.
