She is enjoying story read to her by a W.P.A. "book woman," as the librarians are called by the mountain people. More than 8,000 people in Hyden Ccunty get books from the packhorse libraries. In Hyden County, for instance, more than 2,000 families get reading material from the packhorse library. They had no books before it was started four years ago.

The first packhorse library in the country started at the Wooten Community Center, when Benton Deaton, Presbyterian minister in charge of the center offered the books to the W.P.A. for distribution to residents of the county. Now twenty-nine counties in Kentucky have similar libraries, and the plan is spreading to other States. Before the plan started twenty counties in Kentucky had no public libraries.
