SUNDAY, NOVEMBER J6, THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR SEC. 4 PAGE 3 26 Johnson, leads 4 loUo victory! jszr fx Dentino for 18 and the opening TD seven minutes into the first quarter. Then Johnson began unloading in retaliation with powerful line smashes and it was a duel of two churning legs versus one rifle arm the rest of the route. Capitalizing on defensive end Lou Cristofoli's fumble recovery at the Indiana 28 late in the first quarter, the Crimson barged ahead 7-6 at 14:19 of the second with Johnson skirting end from the 4 and Kellogg converting. But a couple of pass interference calls and Wilson's 5-yard strike to flanker Mike Martin boosted the Illini back on top, 12-7, with 20 seconds to spare in that same chapter and they ranged out to 18-7 on Sherrod's 20-yard reception at 5:28 of the third period before the Hoosiers rebounded furiously.

NEEDING ONLY 1:58 to score-twice on consecutive possessions, they flashed into a 19-18 lead before the quarter ended on startling drives that covered 73 and 71 yards. Clifford, held out in favor of senior Chad Huck until the third quarter because of a shoulder injury, triggered botli surges. He tossed passes of 25 and 41 yards to Steve Corso and Johnson on the first and ripped a 22-yarder to tight end Bob Stephenson on the second. Johnson wound up blasting for both TDs on smashes of 1 and 4 yards, of course, but Clifford, who hit seven of 12 attempts for 119 yards, smoothed the big tailback's path with the long gaining flips into the Illini secondary. Indiana's clinching touchdown Clifford's pass for 7 to Harangody climaxed a comedy of errors segment which included a fumble by Wilbur, an interception by the Hoosiers' Chuck Alexander and a killing bobble of an Indiana punt by Dentino.

Losing 'the handle at the Illinois 16, Dentino finished a poor second to Corso in the recovery battle and the kayo punch was only two plays in the future. After Johnson gouged out 9, Clifford faked to him on second down and floated the haymaker to Harangody wide open in the corner of the end zone. Next Saturday, it's Purdue at West Lafayette. Or maybe East Lynn. expired ever so slowly.

Though destined to finish their own campaign with five straight losses and 3-5 loop report, the Illini succumbed ex-' tremely reluctantly as Wilson nailed Indiana for 403 yards passing and three TDs. He yanked Illinois back into the thick of it after ailing I.U. quarterback Tim Clifford flipped 7 yards to tight end Dave Harangody into the end zone for an 8-point margin with 9:26 remaining. When Kevin Kellogg converted from placement for the second time in the clash which produced no other extra points by either club, it was 26-18. but no way was the victory on ice with the Wilson-to-tight end Mike Sherrod combination eating up 77 yards with four completions that gave the Illini first-and-goal on the I.

Stopped once. Holmes went airborne for the game's final touchdown and Illinois was at least an even bet to duck defeat when the country's premier college pitcher dropped back to fire for two extra points and a morale win. THIS TIME, however. Sherrod, whose 191 yards in receptions set a stadium record, ran into a big argument getting off the line of scrimmage and was in no position to debate Wilbur for possession. Clearly, then, the Illini were finished except they didn't know it.

Sewall's alert recovery put them only 52 yards away with 16 seconds left and Wilson, who hit on 24 of 41 tries, gunned his last one. Flanker Greg Dentino, making a diving catch for a 19-yard gain and scrambling out of bounds, came to a halt at the I.U. 33. That set up Bostrom for a 51-yard boot at :05 and he made 5 yards without turning a wheel when an enthusiastic Indiana lineman leaped across the neutral zone. But the mistake cost nothing as Bostrom misfired badly.

The Illini placekicker last year, who had been supplanted by freshman Mike Bass, Bostrom had not attempted a field goal in the visitors' 10 previous games. He was assigned the task only because Bass was left home for what Coach Mike White explained were "disciplinary reasons." WILSON, WHOSE yardage total also By MAX STULTZ Star Sportswrttcr Bloomington, Ind. Tailback Johnson found enough daylight on a drizzly, dismal afternoon Saturday to reshape his own Indiana crushing record and carry the rBoosiers to a pulsating 26-24 Big Ten Victory over Illinois in their final home game of the season. Hammering for 237 yards on 37 trips and scoring three touchdowns, the 205-pound senior was a one-man assault battalion as the Hoosiers survived a furious last-minute Illini counterattack to a two-game losing streak and boost iieir league mark to 3-4. Johnson, who lugged the ball on all but 18 of Indiana's 55 rushes, easily demolished the previous university standard of 211 which Courtney Snyder first iset against Purdue in 1975 and the Akron uOhio) bulldozer equaled against Duke there' last Oct.

4. Still, the Hoosiers barely escaped the deadly arm of quarterback Dave Wilson who guided the Illini to a threatening -touchdown and into position for a possible field goal, all in the last 88 seconds. I "APPARENTLY IN the driver seat, 2M8, with Illinois on its own 16 and just, 28 on the clock, the Hoosiers had to ticrap for their lives instead as Wilson mounted a final massive aerial bombard-ment that just missed. The fireworks Mttdn't end until Kirk Bpstrom's 46-yard fiejd goal attempt turned into a knuck-Vleball that dropped far short of the Jcrossbar five seconds ahead of the finish. boot, which never got over rqtfail high, actually provided one of the least exciting moments shared by the 'players and a thoroughly damp Memorial Stadium crowd of 38,128.

A bum shot the instant Bostrom "thumped the ball from the fingers of -holder Lance Hofer, it wasn't in the same J3eague with tailback Mike Holmes' 1-yard Jswan dive over left guard that moved the tlllini to 26-24 with 20 seconds left. 2." It carried no weight, either, in com- parison with Indiana safety Tim Wilbur's ind zone interception his second of the vistruggle which prevented the underdog f4ljini from roaring into a 26-26 tie. AND IT WILL be forgotten long before the- ensuing onside kickoff recovery by freshman Luke Sewall which put the Hposiers" backs to the wall as time Indiana tailback Lonnie Johnson (left) takes a. Illinois. Johnson set a Hoosier single-game handoff from quarterback Chad Huck and looks record with 237 yards against the Illini.

Michigan State 30, Minnesota 12 Minneapolis (UPI) Sophomore John Leister fired three touchdown passes, including two to Ted Jones, to lead Michigan State to a 30-12 Big Ten victory Saturday over error-prone Minnesota, snapping the Gophers' three-game winning streak. Leister, completing 14 of 28 passes for 209 yards, broke the game open early in the fourth quaarter with a 10-yard TD pass to Jones to cap a 71-yard drive and open a 12-point lead.

He also threw a 32-yard scoring pass to Jones and a 36-yarder to Tony Gilbert. The Spartans, 2-5 in the Big Ten and 3-7 overall, passed to a 14-12 halftime edge while managing only two yards rushing before dominating in the second half. Minnesota, 4-4 and 5-5, got 201 yards rushing on 23 carries and one touchdown from fullback Garry White, but collapsed in the second half under heavy Spartan pressure. Michigan State stole two. Tim Salem passes and recovered two of three Minnesota fumbles and blocked a punt as it shut off the Gopher attack.

Iowa City, Iowa (AP) Quarterback Art Schlichter threw for 195 yards, including two touchdown passes, to lead No. 7 Ohio State to a 41-7 Big Ten victory over Iowa Saturday. The Buckeye win, combined with Michigan's 26-0 rout of Purdue, means next week's OSU-Michigan clash will once again decide the conference championship and the Big Ten's Rose Bowl entry. Ohio State ran its record to 9-1 overall and 7-0 in the league, while Iowa fell to 3-7 and 3-4. Schlichter completed 13 of 18 passes with just one interception: His scoring passes a 39-yarder to split end Gary Williams and a 23-yarder to tailback Calvin Murray both came in the first quarter.

The Buckeyes also capitalized on numerous Iowa turnovers, converting four of them into touchdowns. They also displayed a powerful ground game, with Murray running for 183 of Ohio State's 293 rushing yards. The Buckeyes' second leading rusher was Tim Spencer, whose 87 yards in-cluded touchdown runs of 1 and 2 yards. Wisconsin 39, Northwestern 19 Evanston, 111. (UPI) Freshman quarterback Jess Cole came off the bench to throw for one touchdown and rush for another to lead Wisconsin to a 39-19 Big Ten victory over Northwestern Saturday, handing the Wildcats their 11th loss of the season and 20th straight defeat in the past two years.

Kicker Mark Doran booted three field goals and Troy King and Curtis Richardson rushed for a short yardage touchdowns to aid the Badgers, 3-7 overall and 2-5 in the Big Ten. Cole threw a 2-yard TD pass to Craig Frederick in the second quarter and scored on a 2-yard run to cap a time consuming drive in the third quarter. Northwestern finished the season losing of all its games for the first time since 1957. Coach Rick Venturi. the subject of black players' criticism in recent weeks, is now 1-31-1 since taking over at Northwestern three years ago.
