FRIDAY. AUGUST 8, 1980 PAGE 32 THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR IV A SCAR STAR AT IRP SATURDAY MCiHT Stocks At Speedway Sure In '81: By ROBIN MILLER Darrell Waltrip will be making his first business trip to Indianapolis this Saturday night when he runs the American Speed Association's Circle City 300 at Indianapolis Raceway Park. But the 33-year old NASCAR star expects he'll be coming back to our fair city again in 1981 at that place out on West 16th Street. "Oh yeah, I definitely think you'll be seeing a NASCAR race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway," declared Darrell during last Friday's test session at IRP. "We see John Cooper pretty regularly now and it's been indicated we'll be, running here.

"I KNOW everything about the race except how much it's gonna pay' Waltrip, the 1979 Olsonite Driver of the Year, claims he's wanted to race at Indy ever since he was a kid. "I've always wanted to race at Indy, but not with what they've been racing," he smiled. "I don't want any part of those fragile, little beauties." Waltrip prefers banging fenders in the solid, taxi cabs he's been wheeling around since he was 14. Since becoming a NASCAR regular in 1972. the man who resides in Franklin, has accumulated 26 Grand National victories and a reputation for hard driving.

Despite the fact he's "made it' in the most popular form of auto racing in this country, Darrell still enjoys hitting the short tracks every chance he gets like Saturday night. "I run a short track show almost every Saturday if it's possible," stated the man who learned his trade on the half-mile at the Nashville Fairgrounds. "I never get tired of the competition or the fun I have on a half-mile." OBVIOUSLY, the Gatorade folks haven't grown tired of Waltrip's performance either on or off the track. "They've been my sponsor for five years and we just signed a new three-year contract last winter." he said of his working agreement with the drink produced by the Indy-based Stokely-Van Camp firm. "Richard Petty's had STP for seven seasons and a lot of guys are able to keep their sponsors happy because NASCAR caters to the sponsors." Waltrip's positive comments about his club brought up the subject of unrest in the Indy-car and Formula One families.

He was asked if there is a lot of political bickering in NASCAR that just never makes the headlines like CART and USAC. "No, we really don't have that many problems," he replied. "There's not much input from both sides Bill France makes the rules and we live by them. "NASCAR does a good job of enforcing the rules, too, because they get people who know enough about the sport We don't have doctors, lawyers or 75-year-old men running our show." NASCAR )S MAKING a big change in 1981 by going to smaller wheelbase cars. Waltrip, who'll be driving an experimental Buick Skylark V-8 at IRP.

was asked what the general feeling was among his competitors? "It's gonna cost them a lot of money 'to change over, but most of the guys feel a smaller car is necessary," he answered. 1 Waltrip's Clermont competition will include the former scourge of IRP, Bob Senneker (who won the ASA show last June), two-time ASA champion Mark Martin and Indy 500 vet John Martin. Gates and practice open at 4 p.m., with qualifying at 6 and racing at 8 o'clock. Admission is $12 for adults, $6 for students with I.D. and children 12 and under will be admitted free.

Kod So 7, Brewer 3 Boston (APl Veteran slugger Carl Yastrzemski triggered a four-run seventh inning with a bunt single Thursday night in sparking the Boston Red Sox to a 7-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. Yastrzemski. who will be 41 in two weeks, surprised the Brewers by putting down a bunt to the left of the mound which Milwaukee starter Paul Mitchell was unable to handle. Jim Rice, one of baseball's most feared sluggers although in an 0-for-10 slump, then bunted Yastrzemski to second with his first sacrifice since 1978. Dwight Evans was walked intentionally to set up a possible double play but Glenn Hoffman crossed up the strategy by extending his hitting streak to 10 games with a single, scoring Yastrzemski and snapping a 3-3 tie.
