FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1979- THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR -PAGE 41 KMGIIT HURT, ZEIVO WAIVED Carter Joins Slick's 6 Solid9 Pacers while Indiana hit on only 12 of 17. "You can't blame the officials for a loss," said Slick. "But the fouls just piled up against us after a while and I know we were being hit out there." DESPITE THE DIFFERENCE in foul calls, the Pacers still owned a six-point lead midway through the fourth quarter. They had blown a 15-point bulge in the second period when the Suns erupted for 10 points in just over a minute, eventually taking the lead on an 18-2 spurt. But then after the Pacers went back on top, Walter Davis and Paul Westphal combined for 17 straight fourOxjuarter points to give Phoenix the ball game.

"They just tightened up and closed down our inside game," said James Edwards, who led his club with 23 but was scoreless in the final quarter. "Earlier they were letting me do whatever I wanted, but they took away that option." This is one of the things the Pacers will be working on when they meet the 6-12 Clippers who are playing without Lloyd Free (bad back) and Bill Walton. San Diego was blown out by the Lakers at home, 137-91, Tuesday night. "It's great to keep the inside game going," said Leonard, "but we've got to be able to give the ball to someone else -besides James up close when we have to." fir Ufa All items on display lor immediate sal while they lost at FHE TOCX MAN, 7150 E. 16 17, 10-6 tv IPCCIAL CORRESPONDENT San Diego, Calif. Coach Bobby (Slick) Leonard's "solid" Indiana Pacers motto came at least partially unglued Thursday as a result of an injury Wednesday night to Billy Knight and the placing of Tony Zeno on waivers to make room' for the signing of free agent guard Ron Carter. Knight, a guard with an average of 11.9 points in 13 games this year, will be missed more than Zeno, ex-Arizona State star, with a 1.8 average in six games. But the question remains whether or not Carter, a VMI product, will be able to make up the difference. Knight suffered a sprained thumb Wednesday night in the 104-100 loss to Phoenix and will miss at least two games.

Knight had four points in 25 minutes before the injury. The 6-5 Carter was a second-round draft choice of the Los Angeles Lakers last year, averaging 3.1 in 46 games. has been the Indiana Pacer motto of late. You can hear Slick yell it Incessantly from the bench throughout the game. "Stay solid," screams Slick, meaning for them to stay together as a team both offensively and defensively.

The little concept has been a big part of the Indiana Pacers' recent metamorphosis. "We have to play solid to beat these teams, especially on the road," says Leonard. "We're not the kind of team which is going to blow anyone else out with one or two players. We have to stay solid as an entire unit if we expect to win." The Pacers are beginning to find that out as they hit their fourth city on this five-stop western tour. Indiana meets San Diego's decimated Clippers tonight (10:30, WIBC) at the Sports Arena, then closes out the successful trip Sunday afternoon at the Forum against the Lak ers, Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Indiana also is finding out that if they don't stay solid for 48 minutes, they might just lose. That was the story Wednesday night at Phoenix as the Pacers played their most complete game of the trip, but lost to the explosive Suns to end a three-game winning streak. "WITH A FEW BREAKS we would have won the thing," moaned Leonard after watching his team run out of last-second miracles. The Pacers' victories at Oakland and Salt Lake City came on the strength of three-point shots at the final buzzer. "I can't say that I'm particularly disappointed with the loss," Slick continued, "because I see the team continuing to improve.

I'd just like to see a little more ball movement and a total effort throughout the game. "The Suns are such a talented team that they can come at you before you turn around." The Suns did not play a particularly aggressive game in winning their third straight on a six-game home stand at the Veterans' Memorial Coliseum. That was evident by the lack of foul calls against the Suns who allowed Indiana to move at will inside for almost the entire evening. Phoenix never went over the foul limit until late in the game and the Pacers didn't go to the limit in either the first or third periods a rare occurrence in an NBA game. "We've had a tendency to stand around a little bit this year," said Phoenix coach John MacLeod.

"We don't play consistently from game to game, let along quarter to quarter. Our shooting percentage is down about seven points overall from last year, too. It's hard to figure it." Indeed, the Pacers outshot the Suns from the field 49.4 percent to 44.4 as Phoenix hit only 40 of 90 shots, but the loss came on a couple of Sun explosions as well as that wide difference from the line.
