I find it sad that a show like ours is not well-respected in the industry." But respect can be spelled another way: r-a-t-i-n-g-s. Now in its fifth season, Home Improvement, at 9 p.m.

Tuesdays on WRTV (Channel 6). was the third-highest-rated prime time show (behind Seinfeld and ER) In Indianapolis last week. WTTV (Channel 4) also re-runs an hour of Home Improvement daily (6:30 p.m.) But how long will star Allen remain with the show? Allen starred in The Santa Clause, the fourth-highest-grossing movie of 1994, and has two more films coming up. His book Don't Stand Too Close to a Naked Man hit No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list.

"I definitely see the show running two more years after this," Karn says. "After that, it will really be up to everybody Involved. If we can still put on something we can respect instead of something we Just churn out Before Home Improvement, Karn struggled for years in regional theater, off-Broadway and commercials before meeting Matt Williams, Carmen Finestra and David McFadzean at the New Harmony (Ind.) "People forget that Matt created Roseanne," Karn says. "Even if he did nothing more in his life than Roseanne and Home Improvement, you'd have to consider him really successful." Karn, meanwhile, is keeping busy. Last week, he filmed an episode of ABC's Boy Meets World, and his new family movie Picture Perfect airs at 9 p.m. Saturday on Channel 6. The film's a trifle, but a pleasant one.

Karn and Mary Page Keller play financially struggling single par- ents who pretend to be married so they can win a soft-drink company contest. Dave Thomas Grace Under Fire plays the company head who moves in to check out this "perfect family." It's all goofy Innocent fun. "After four years of playing Al, I didn't realize how much I needed to play someone else until I did it," Karn says. "It's nice to know those (acting) muscles still work." Right out the window Channel 27 has dropped conservative National Empowerment Television for failing to generate "any measurable ratings," says Manager Ken Ladage. And this on a station that considers a 1 rating for Donahue reruns a success.

Ladage finds most puzzling the apathy for Progress Report, an NET call-in show with House Speaker Newt Gingrich at 9 p.m. Tuesdays: "You'd think in a state so supposedly conservative as this one, people would Jump at a chance to talk to Gingrich live."
