Associated Press MONTE CARLO, Monaco Michael Schumacher won his fifth Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday after pole sitter David Coulthard stalled at the start of the most demanding course in Formula One.

Schumacher extended his lead ROUNDUP over Coulthard In the standings with a comfortable victory on the twisting circuit through this Mediterranean principality. Coulthard-was seeking a second consecutive victory. But he wasted his pole position vital to winning at Monaco with his botched start on the formation lap, forcing the British driver to start from the back of the pack. That allowed Schumacher to start alone from the front row of the 78-lap race. And the three-time defending Formula One champion seized the opportunity.

He paced Ferrari to a 1-2 victory, with Brazilian teammate Rubens Barrichello second, 0.4 seconds behind. Eddie Irvine finished third in his Jaguar, 30.6 seconds behind. Schumacher is tied with Graham Hill with five victories on Monaco's 2.1-mile circuit. Ayrton Senna, the late Brazilian, had six. "I certainly love this circuit," Schumacher said.

"I always found it easy to find the right setup here." He finished in 1 hour, 47 minutes, 22.561 seconds an average speed of 91.287 mph over 163.3 miles. Fourth place went to former champion Jacques Vllleneuve in a BAR-Honda. Coulthard was fifth in his McLaren-Mercedes, one lap behind. Jean Alesi was sixth in a Prost-Acer. But Burton led a race-high 126 laps, and his win gave Roush its third consecutive victory In the 600. Matt Kenseth won last year and Burton took the title in 1999.

"There are still some struggles ahead of us," Burton said. "But we believed and decided we were going to stick to our game plan and not worry about what everyone else in the garage is doing." For the second year in a row, Jerry Nadeau was hit with bad luck. Nadeau led 115 laps last May, only to blow an engine with 40 Cadillac DTS GOING GREEN! GOING GREEN!
