CIT William J. DeFouw was a longtime businessman and community leader SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2000 THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR Obituaries Hugh G. Baker, 85, had been longtime executive, civic leader honors and awards, he was named Solicitor of the Year in 1997. Active in the Chamber of Commerce since 1961, he had served as membership drive captain and chairman. Mr.

DeFouw helped found the Lyn Treece Boys and Girls Club and was chairman of its building fund. He had also been a Soap Box Derby sponsor. A member and trustee of the YMCA board, he was named Benefactor of Youth each year since 1979. He served on the board of directors of Junior Achievement and had been named distinguished director emeritus. He was also a guardian donor and leadership member for Boy Scouts of America.

Other honors include: Grand Marquis de Lafayette; Herman Goodman Civic Service Award In 1988 and John Purdue Club Distinguished Service Award in 1999. He was also honored by the Tippecanoe School Corp. for contributions to its driver education programs. Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity. DeFouw was chairman of the board of DeFouw Chevrolet-BMW. Named consulting dealer to the Chevrolet School of Merchandising and Management in 1979, he had served on the General Motors Advisory Council. His dealership has sold more than 100.000 vehicles in the Lafayette area and had been ranked as one of the top 500 U.S. dealers and one of Indiana's Top 50 dealers. Mr.

DeFouw's professional memberships included National Automobile Dealers Association and Greater Lafayette New Car Dealers Association, of which he served twice as president. He served the United Way in various capacities, including associate and vice chairman and capital funds 'division chairman and board member. The recipient of a number of United Way ber of the Catholic Youth Organization board of directors. He was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Govs. Evan Bayh and Frank O'Bannon.

Baker, 85, Indianapolis, an Insurance executive and civic leader, died Sept. 22. A lifelong member of the Democratic Party, he had been a precinct committeeman, 30th Ward chairman and delegate to the Democratic state conventions.

He served as president of the Indianapolis Board of Public Works from 1957 to 1969. Mr. Baker was a charter member of me Monsignor Downey council oi tne Knights of Columbus, where he had served as Grand Knight. He worked at Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. for 32 years before retir- ing.

A member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, he was a tenor in numerous Catholic church choirs for more than 70 years and was a member of the Ambassadors Choral Group. Mr. Baker was a recipient of the Monsignor Busald Award and a mem- AUBREY CARL JOHNSON 8. Indianapolis, died Sept. 20.
