The Albert Sidney Johnston chapter here has donated 600 books over the years to the Louisville Free Public Library's Confederate Collection. Each book is marked with a Confederate bookplate a reproduction of the great seal of the Confederacy.

This bookplate, used by the U.D.C. nationwide, was the suggestion of Mrs. John L. Woodbury, who as historian-general in 1925 set about the establishment of the library's Confederate Collection. To collect and preserve materials for a true and faithful history of the Civil War is just one of the missions of the U.D.C.

History Records More Reasons "The History of The Daughters of The Confederacy," compiled and written by more than a dozen members throughout the country, lists four other reasons for the U.D.C.'s existence: To fulfill the duties of benevolence to the Confederate survivors, and those dependent on them. To assist the descendants of the worthy Confederates in securing an education. To' record the part taken by Southern women during the war and throughout the period of reconstruction. To cherish the ties of friendship among members. U.D.C.

Was Organized In 1891 The U.D.C. was organized in September, 1894. But already the dedicated women of the South had numerous associations. Members of monument societies were erecting state and county memorials to local heroes and to the Confederate Army in general. Memorial societies were devoting themselves to the families as well as to the fighters.

Members buried the dead, consoled the living, and made plans to educate the children. It was from these associations that the U.D.C. grew. Louisville's Monument Association was one of the bustling, busy societies invited by the U.D.C. to unite nationwide.

The president, Mrs. Susan Preston Hepburn, demurred. She and her members were then building the monument now at Third and Brandeis. They felt they should not join the U.D.C. until their present organization was free of debt.

Funds were finally collected and the monument presented to the City in 1895. Mayor Henry S. Tyler in his gift-acceptance speech agreed that the City would light the monument and keep in order the plot on which it stood. Debt-free, the monument association, with 50 charter members, organized the U.D.C. chapter here in September, 1897.

It was the 120th chapter to join the organization. The Albert Sidney Johnston chapter was named for the famed Kentucky general. The first president was his daughter, Miss Henrietta Preston Johnston. Resigned Because Of Health Months later "Miss Hennie" resigned because of poor health and was succeeded by Mrs. H.

W. Bruce, whose husband was a member of the Confederate Congress. Once, when Congressional goings-on ended in sharp debate, Mrs. Bruce observed: "No wonder they don't get along. The Confederate flag has been hung upside down." 4Tfiittlii OPEN OPEN WED.
