THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1995 CIS i ARENA FLAG FOOTBALL PacVSfest team owner happy to find home in Indy Robin Miller Sundays 10 A.M.-2 P.M. 6 Man Teams (Carry Up To 12) Season Starts Nov. 26 25 Minute Halfs 2 Referees CALL 898-2285 the pace-car program shouldn't be misconstrued because PPG is Just as unhappy with Indianapolis Speaking of Indy. no more Miller Pit Stop Contest Best news in a long time: Indy native Andy Hll-lenburg captured the ARCA stock-car championship. The hardworking 32-year-old, who left sprinters and Indiana five years ago with little money and big ambitions, now heads for the Busch series.

Mayor Steve Goldsmith encouraged Bruce McCaw to plant his racing roots In Indianapolis, and, even though he'll likely be running In Michigan next "This used to be a seasonal business, but it's grown to a year-round professional series and I spend much of my time on it. I'm not in it Just to support racing ultimately I expect a return." McCaw, with 37 full-time employees, expects his third full season to be more rewarding. Gugelmin gave him some fine drives in '95, including leading the most laps at Indy, and nobody has a more thorough test program than PacWest. "We've not met our expectations, but we set the bar pretty high," continued the former SCCA racer. "I guess we were disappointed in some ways, but we learned a lot and came out a lot smarter.

"But we expect to win races this year." With Danny Sullivan out of the picture but VISA and Bank of America still on board, McCaw has two IndyCar franchises but only one driver at present. "I never knew I had so many close friends," he said with a grin. "I've heard from a lot of drivers, and we're going to test some guys in the next three weeks, but we will run two cars." Penske problems cured? Whatever caused Roger Penske's 1-2 punch of Al Unser and Emerson Flttipaldl to miss the show last May has obviously been cured. During Goodyear tire testing last week, Paul Tracy constantly lapped the Speedway at 230 miles per hour topping out at a high 232 in Nigel Bennett's revamped '95 chassis. "The car felt good and so did the horsepower," said Tracy, reunited with Penske after a year with NewmanHaas.

Andre Ribelro led the unofficial list at 233 mph in his Honda during Firestone's runs two weeks ago, while Robby Gordon (Goodyear) and Gugelmin (Goodyear) also topped 231. Michael Andrettl (Goodyear) and Scott Pruett (Firestone) bested 228 mph, but one of the Newman-Haas Lolas sported a huge camera and was driven by a guy who looked very much like Mario Andrettl. CART announcement due Nothing official out of CART's board meeting last week, but an announcement on the Outlaw 500 Is forthcoming and I hear CBS definitely wants to go up against ABC and Indy on May 26 Since Derek Daly got sideways with Paul Page and lost his Job with ESPN, CBS would be smart to pick up Daly for May because, if nothing else, he Is Indy-car racing's best analyst PPG's news that It's sponsoring CART for the 17th straight year but nixing its hospitality tents and cutting back F. "The reason this building is here is not because of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway," said McCaw, whose Impressive facility Is located next door to Walker facing on the city's Northwest-'side. "The Speedway gets some credit, but let's be honest, you never feel you're quite part of it every year at Indy. We made this investment because we are Interested in the PPGIndyCar series and being here Is preeminent for doing business." McCaw doesn't have a problem with Tony George's Indy Racing League or the Speedway, just a major objection to the manipulating of qualifying.

"I think the world of Indy's traditions, but they could go away In a heartbeat. Traditions are fragile. Remember, LeMans is not the race it used to be. "If Tony wants a stock-block series, that's fine. But I can't make an investment like this for a few races and I'm committed to IndyCar.

And whatever happens here doesn't change the overall series." McCaw, who took a flyer three years ago at Indianapolis with Dominic Dobson, boasts a two-car stable with Mauricio Gugelmin, a driver-to-be-named-later and major backing from Hollywood cigarettes. "I became Intrigued with this as a business I was fascinated with the technology and marketing," said McCaw, whose cellular phone buyout by AT brought him millions. "Sam Hanks was a dear friend and he got me interested in this sport, along with Bill Daniels (the cable television pioneer who campaigned Lloyd Ruby). iff wM a LI (MM Bushwacker II Overalls Two-way leg zippers to waist with 4 oz Hollofil Insulation. Available in Brown Camo with sheath, $25.99 Phil Casey, veteran chief mechanic and member of the Indy Racing League technical team, said the IRL has submitted a request for such engines to all manufacturers.

"We expect a decision in four to six weeks," Casey said. He estimated total cost for such a racing engine would be between $65,000 and $70,000. Additionally, crews would be allowed to do their own overhauling after races. Such a move would eliminate the; turbocharged (or supercharged) engines that have been used by primary teams since 1962. Currently, these engines are leased by teams and the turbo-chargers provided by USAC at Indy.

Casey estimates the engine budget for a top IndyCar team Is about $1.8 million. Roberto Guerrero set the current track record of 232.482 mph in 1992 in a turbo-charged, stock-block Buick. Casey believes the totally aspirated engines will attain 220 mph. Casey said the IRL has a solid commitment from 23 cars for the season-opening Disney World 200 on next Jan. 27.

More are expected by the entry deadline of Nov. 30 and the teams entered will be announced shortly thereafter. The track will be dedicated Nov. 28 and the IRL will hold a news conference to announce a Formula 2000 support race will be run on Friday, Jan. 26.

First testing also will be conducted that day. IRL representative Michael Pal-misano said all tickets except for a few in the upper levels have been sold. Seating for 49,000 fans will be shipped in from Virginia. Palmisano also stated that "you almost know there will" be more IRL races added for the second eason following the 1996 "500." The first IRL champion will be crowned after races at Orlando, Phoenix and the "500." Meanwhile, Palmisano, Bob Cassaday of USAC and Casey emphasized that the 25-IRL car restriction for the "500" does not mean 25 cars from the IRL are locked In. They pointed out that if IRL team cars cannot meet the speed percentage requirement, then those spots will become open to other entrants.
