Honda's Indy-car progress has been well-chronicled. Bobby Ra-hal's team began testing the new V-8 two years ago with Mike Graff, then went racing with it in '94.

The frequent front-runner went to mid-pack. He was second at Toronto but finished 10th in the season points. At the end of the year, he dropped Honda for the proven Mercedes (a derivative of the Ilmor). Firestone was the biggest question mark after 20 years away from the series. No longer are there doubts, though.

Scott Pruett leads Indy-car racing with 51 points, having finished the most laps (658 of 660). "I don't know if I'd call it the greatest comeback story," Goodyear said. "I looked at it like there were a lot of unknowns." He winked with approval. "For me, I was missing (Indy-car racing) but I only wanted (to return) if I could do it right." he said. "I did not want to get labeled.

May 12 Jacques Villeneuve, then turned over its data to Honda's overall development. "We have a lot of experience in Formula One, but Indy-car racing is a different area," said Honda chief engineer Kazutoshi Nishizawa. "It has been a tough experience for us. This is much different. We were struggling." Honda's success Sunday was not restricted to Goodyear.

Teammate Andre Ribeiro, a rookie from Brazil, qualified 12th at 226.495 mph. He came back from Saturday's hajl-lmpact crash In practice to solidly get into the show. When he returned to the Tas- man garage, countryman Emerson Fittipaldi was waiting to shake his hand. "He had a very good run and he did a beautiful job in his first time at Indianapolis," the two- time winner said. "I was just asking him for his experience in setting up a car." "Andre did a great Job after taking a big hit." Goodyear said.

"This has ben a solid (day)." Car owner Steve Home walked that similar line of calmness. "I'm not a big believer in dreams," he said. "If you look, Honda has never, ever failed. I don't know what happened (with RahalHogan), but for me it was the chance of a lifetime to run the No. 1 engine manufacturer In racing.

"It was a win-win situation for me. There was no down side." Home went on to give credit to Honda's test team, Comptech Racing and driver Parker Johnstone. Comptech ran several laps of 230 mph at IMS Innate April. I -V.
