It's the kind of song Dylan used to write, and sometimes still does. But that's not all.

The Silos' fifth album also includes garage-band covers of Lucinda Williams' Change the Locks and Jonathan Richman's I'm Straight, as well as a cover of the definitive song about trying to escape boredom, Let's Take Some Drugs and Drive Around. It's terrific from beginning to end. (The Silos return to Indianapolis next Friday at the Patio. Tickets are $5 and available in advance at the Vogue, (317) 259-7029.) White apparently ditched such aspirations after his first and only solo album back in 1985. But Bailey has pressed on, devoting alternate albums to pop and gospel.

He's back again with a self-titled album that may not spawn as big a hit as his 1984 Easy Lover duet with Phil Collins, but it's good nonetheless. You'll find some very engaging pop-soul here, much of it produced by singer-songwriters Chuckii Booker and Brian McKnight. Bailey's falsetto doesn't soar as it once did on standards like Reasons and Write a Song For You, but his vocals seem more expressive when he isn't pushing to reach those stratospheric notes. And he can still weave some soul into a song, particularly on Love Me Tonight and Just Like Summer. Other notable tracks include Yours, an interesting duet with Arrested Development's Nadirah Ali; the McKnight-produced I'm Ready and Crazy Things You Do For Love and Booker's Stay Right Here and Live it Up.

Easily the best song is No Time to Cry, inspired by his death, in which the singer delays her mourning because she has bills to pay and shows to play. It is possibly the most heartfelt denial of grief you'll ever hear.

In the title track, she concludes, "My life, it's only a seasona passing September that no one will recall." With songs like these, that doesn't seem likely. Both Blanchard and Howard had input into the film Malcolm and now As expected, Blanchard's trumpet never wastes a note. His quartet captures moods well: Soothing after-hours drums and piano are brought to life by the trumpet on Lady Sings the Blues; there's forlorn and compassion on In My Solitude. But a backing horn in the brisk What a Little Moonlight Can Do sounds as if it's playing a different tune.

And you've got to like Jeanie Bryson's voice to like the disc. While she sings on only five of the 12 songs, her mature, yet soft vocals aren't compelling. She even seems to try to force atmosphere on the anti-lynching Strange Fruit (which is just getting more theatrical with every interpretation).
