IMS I i i j.i This issue of tradition at Indianapolis Motor Speedway has weighed so heavily on Tom Carnegie's mind that it exhausted many moments for many months. Still, he underestimated the significance. This Pit Pass Curt Cavin -a.

Catch-22. Without it. worry. With "It's too early to say," said IMS weekend he was confronted in the restroom. Why, he was asked, did he change? Carnegie had an answer.

"Some things should be part of one race and not part of the other," he said. "When I say, 'He's on it' or 'It's a new track record' that doesn't fit here. "This is the Brickyard 400, and I felt I would be subject to criticism from the diehard Indianapolis 500 Instead, Carnegie said, "He's got the go" on the public address system when qualifiers started their one-lap runs. He said "It's a new Brickyard record" when the top qualifying effort was bettered. Some groaned.

Indy is Indy, they figured, and Carnegie should follow Indy traditions. "Isn't that silly that people would worry about that?" Carnegie said. 'These weren't decisions 1 made on my own. I talked it over with my staff and we tried to come up with ways to start a new trademark. If people want to hear those other (famous sayings), tell them to come to the Broadcasting different With the shorter three-day event format, Carnegie said the public address staff had to be shortened.

Veteran announcer Jim Phillippe has shared play-byplay duties with Carnegie while Dave Calabro has handled spot work, including interviews. John Totten, used extensively in May, is not part of this weekend's action. Carnegie said Totten would return to the microphone in May. "There's an awful lot of noise and not enough time for four people," he said. "There's just not enough time to build the drama.

Our Job Is theater. (A.J.) Foyt was three or four spots before the bubble when I started saying he was on the bubble. "There's no time (in this format) for people to savor the drama." Another change was in power. The public address system's boost was increased 20,000 watts to compensate for the louder stock cars. "My voice got strained trying to talk over them," Carnegie said.

Fence ready for anything The catch fence stands as a tall spokesman Bob Walters. "The thing is, we wanted a barrier in front of the fans. Whether there will be more in the future, I can't say." This Hillin relaxing Bobby Hillin former Indy-car car owner and father of the Winston Cup driver in car No. 44, is back at the Speedway in a more relaxed, more dad-like manner. "It's exciting because I'm here just as a father, that's it," he said.

"I haven't ever wanted to get back into (the car-owning business). When Bobby started (in 1982), we overlapped one year. "Watching him made it much easier for me not to (miss it). I get more enjoyment out of watching him than I did out of racing myself." Based in Midland, Texas. Hillin Sr.

"The little rat stole my name," he said of his son continues to have heavy business interest in the natural gas industry. It was the drastic drop in gas prices which drove both Hillin and Jim Hall out of racing in the early 1980s. Fortunately, business picked up for both, and Hall returned to Indy cars. Hillin had had enough. Of his four drivers from 1976-82 Jan it, That remains to be seen.

Since the Indianapolis 500 in May, the Speedway erected a massive cable fence along the infield creek In Turn 1, among other places. It serves as a protection from the stock cars, which have been known to tumble off course (remember the recent ultra-flips of Rusty Wallace at Talladega and the late Davey Allison at Pocono). The fence begins at the entrance of Turn 1 and eliminates some of the grassy area previously used by individuals with credentials. The biggest difference here, though, is that the Infield bleacher spectators no longer have an unobstructed view of the track. Those who have held those seats for the "500" likely won't be pleased when they return in May.

The fence continues through the south chute. Instead of erecting a portion of fence, IMS officials eliminated the infield grandstands in Turn 2 and put up a small fence to keep parked cars at bay. Individuals standing here are at least 40 yards farther from the action, again for safety purposes. The only other place a new fence stands is in Turn 4. Will more follow? The fourth-place qualifying position has pushed him to 4-1. "I'm going to win this race," he said Twenty-three Fords, 15 Chevro-lets and five Pontiacs will start the Opperman. Bubby Jones, Tom Bagley and Al Unser the latter, obviously, had the most success.

Unser finished fifth in the third and final year with Hillin. "It cost $2.1 million in "82 for one car. What Is it now, $6 million?" he "It was too much, but the oil business (decline) made it an easy call." After the race, it will be signed by the driver and auctioned off, with the proceeds going to charity. Spencer usually has a different doll in his car for every race the fast-food restaurant makes three other similar toys but he decided to let the Hamburglar ride with him two races in a row. The same doll was a passenger two weeks ago when he won the Die-Hard 500 at the Talladega Super-speedway. "You know how superstitious these guys are," team spokesman Rick Humphrey said. "Since the Hamburglar gave them such a good ride, they decided to put him back in there." "I'm not superstitious, but these guys are," Spencer responded, pointing to his crew.

The Spencer team has had fun with its charity project. After the driver was involved in a bumping incident, Ronald McDonald rode the next week with his hands taped over his eyes. After Spencer hurt his shoulder in a test crash, the Hamburglar rode along with his arm taped in a sling. 95w Lance Wade J.R.
