THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR FRIDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1993 Appeals court cuts killer's sentence in half pleaded guilty, but the appeals court said the correct sentence for the Class felony is the standard 10 years. A judge may now reduce that further, to six years, or increase it back to 20. The appeals court said Judge Paula Lopossa of Marion Superior Court, Criminal Division. Room 1. gave too much weight in sentencing Ector to the consideration that a lesser sentence would "depreci ate the seriousness" of the crime.

She cited in her sentencing how Ector, who was 16 at the time, was carrying a knife and used it to stab Bertram Bowman in the back during a fight in the school cafeteria. Lopossa should have balanced that against the remorse shown by Ector and his lack of a criminal history, the appeals court said. Star Staff Report The Indiana Court of Appeals on Thursday cut in half the 20-year sentence Edward Ector received for fatally knifing a fellow student at Arlington High School In Indianapolis two years ago. Ind. The artist's face lights up in stark contrast to the solemn figures of saints he's THIS WEEKEND! fffif ill as an iconographer for the past 20 years and had dabbled in the art before that time. The technique differs from the older method called fresco used for painting religious symbols in churches. Rev. Jurewicz says iconography is painting on white, finished surfaces after they've dried.

Fresco, In contrast, is a method that artists use to paint on freshly spread lime plaster, a rare practice these days. "This is the most difficult one," he says of the mural in the choir loft. "That's because It's really a series of individual little murals that are made up of the individual figures. The other murals here that I did were not as complicated. They were more a single mural rather than so many complete individual figures." Michael Galich, president of the St.

Sava Church executive board, says Rev. Jurewicz has painted the murals on the three other curved walls that make up the design of the church, which is formed like a cross. In 1991, he painted Mary and Christ on the church's east wall. It took him two months. He spent two weeks painting the nativity of Christ on the north wall in March 1993.

Two months later, he painted the resurrection of Christ on the south wall. The Rev. Jovan Todorovich of St. Sava says he saw Rev. Jurewlcz's work through a picture on a greeting card he received from a church official in Australia.

"I liked it and inquired about who had done the work," Rev. Todorovich says. "I was told he was right here in this country. So we set about finding him to have him do the iconography for our church. All the artwork in this church has been done by him.

We wanted no one else to do the painted on the curved choir loft in St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church. The Rev. Theodore Jurewicz of Erie, talks about his work as he climbs around the six-level scaffold in the church. Rev.

Jurewicz dabs large dots of white paint to depict Jewels on the ornate costumes In the mural that's almost finished. He says he soon will move the scaffold to paint a picture of Christ in the center of the soaring ceiling. "Dot. Dot. Dot.

Sometimes it gets a little monotonous with all these little dots," Rev, Jurewicz says. He laughs as he puts finishing touches on the pictures of the 12 saints, who are important to a faith that Is intertwined with a history rich with religious and political significance. The saints are of royal origin. They were kings, czars, queens and archbishops. Most are queens who became nuns and kings who became priests.

Most of the male figures are garbed in royal robes, and most of the female figures are dressed in unadorned clothing. "They had all these Jewels," Rev. Jurewicz says. "They wore these heavy pearls and gold. It must have been very hard to carry It all around.

Can you imagine walking around with all that weight? But that's what they did in those days." Rev. Jurewicz, 43, takes leaves of absence from his duties as assistant priest at Nativity of Christ Russian Orthodox Church, an old rite church In Erie, to paint the religious murals in other churches. Iconography is the major way he expresses his faith, says Rev. Jurewicz, who is of Polish descent. He says he was born in Erie and is a convert to the Russian Orthodox Church.
