Dr. David Dennis, Kentland dentist, Newton Comity coroner 15 years median, struck a guardrail, spun back onto the roadway and then veered off the north side of the interstate, Trooper G. Ashby said. All three of the Smiths were wearing sccit belts.

Fred Smith became managing editor of The Herald in February 1997 after 12 years as city editor. "He was a credit to his family, his church, this newspaper and to his profession," said Dan Rumbach, co-president and publisher of The Herald. Smith also was a high priest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as high councilman in the Evansville Stake at the time of his death. He had served five years as the church's local branch president. A native of Butler, Smith graduated from Penn State University.

Erin Smith was a straight-A student who excelled at band. The surviving children are Sean, 21, Alex, 17. Amy, 12, Kimberly, 10, and Zachary, 8. MILDRED ELIZABETH QUINTON WALDEN LEE, 82, Franklin, died July 21. She worked in food service for the Indiana Masonic Home, Franklin, retiring in 1982.

Previously, she worked as a sales clerk for Wm. H. Block Co. and as a seamstress for Varynit Mills. Franklin.

Norman Fred Smith, the managing editor of The Herald newspaper in Jasper, died with a daughter in a van crash Thursday apparently after he fell asleep while driving, police said. Smith, 48, and his daughter Erin, 15, both suffered massive head injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene of the single-vehicle accident along 1-64 in Perry County, Indiana State Police said. Smith's wife, Diane, 47, suffered scratches and was released after treatment at St.

Joseph's Hospital in Hun-tingburg. The accident occurred at 1:05 a.m. The Smiths were westbound on 1-64 near the Perry-Spencer county line when Fred Smith apparently fell asleep at the wheel, police said. The three were returning to their home in Hun-tingburg from Louisville, Ky. The Dodge van veered into the ISADORA I.

RAYMER ROBERTS, 92, Anderson, died July 22. Before retiring in 1969, she worked for Ward Stilson in Anderson and for Sears, Roebuck and Co. in Greenfield and Elkhart. She also had owned and operated the Strawberry Patch Gift Shop. She was a member of Bethany Christian Church, Anderson, and American Association of Retired Persons.
