'Beat the Band' emcee collects authentic American humor By Ed Edstrom Eddie Mayehoff, star of the Wednesday show, "Beat the Band," over N.B.C.-WAVE at 7:30 p.m., is a busy man these days. Besides his radio program, he is a headliner at a Manhattan night club, the Blue Angel, a featured comic in the Broadway hit, "Early to Bed," and he does four to five shows a week at Army hospitals and camps. Eddie got into show business after leaving Yale in 1932.

In the St. Louis Municipal Opera, he played everything from the hing legs of a camel to front man for a knife thrower. In 1935, Eddie, who plays eleven instruments, organized his own band, alternating a season be tween the Westchester Embassy Club and a Miami Beach night spot. Subsequent engagements at Knott hotels in New York (Vanderbilt, Shelton, Governor Clinton and others) kept him busy until 1939. RfcorIel Voice of People Then Eddie hitched his wagon to Norman Corwin's rising radio star, appearing long series of Corwin dramas as an actor.

Borrowing the technique of another Yale man, Sinclair Lewis, the young orchestra leader had meantime been hanging around side streets, squares and parks, the Bowery and Times Square, with pencil in hand, jotting down the way people talk. His stack of notebooks and recording of humble Americana reminded Corwin of the late Ring Lardner. Highlights i. Eddie Mayehoff When they were aired with Corwin's help, they prompted critic Clifton Fadiman to observe that "Mayehoff has a sense of character that would put many novelists to shame." The success of these sketches led to his own 52-week network program, "Eddie Mayehoff On the Town," and to engagements in a long list of night clubs the Algonquin, Cafe Society Downtown, the Pierre's Cotillion the Ruban Bleu, where he broke all records by remaining eight months. Here his impersonations of Miss Tcssie, an over-efficient supervisor at Schrnfft'8, and of an earnest and enthusiastic but addled business executive in the "Mayehoff Incentive Plan" brought down packed houses.

He took over "Beat Ihe Band," a musical quiz session, when Hildegarde left it for her Tues 1 Tgzy Ed Martin, manager of the Louisville team, said his club had been in uniform since early this morning and did not complete a semi-final game until late this afternoon. He said two of his players were overcome by heat today and he "could not play tonight." BROKEN FOOT Herbert E. Michaels, business manager of the Cincinnati club, said "we played the schedule as we understood it. (The finals were scheduled for 8:30 p.m. today).

He (Martin) knew he was to play at 8:30 and his team didn't show up. We have a boy with a broken foot but sickness is no excuse." Martin said Louisville was willing to play tomorrow, but Tuesday's Race Results "Well, I warned him against filling his canteen with brandy!" Race Entries and Selections of the Day's Radio Programs are correct they go to Butler said the Cincinnati club "told me it absolutely would not play tomorrow. They were within their technical rights and I awarded them the game and tournament on forfeiture." The Louisville manager said he had not yet decided on filing a protest to the National American Legion headquarters. Louisville scored four runs in the ninth inning this afternoon to defeat Waukegan, 111., 11-7, and advance to the final. Johnny Loeffler, Louisville second baseman, doubled in the ninth with the bases loaded to score the tie-breaking runs and win the game.
