Gianotti top qualifier Carol Gianotti of Australia took over the lead in the final round of match play and held off Leanne Barrette by 67 pins in gaining the top qualifying position in the championship round of the $50,000 Brunswick Open at South Bend, Ind. Gianotti completed 42 games with a pinfall of 9,616 In moving past Barrette, the Yukon, resident and fourth-round leader who downed 9,549 pins. In third was Michelle Mullen of Matteson, 111., with 9,489, followed by Carol Norman of Oklahoma City with 9,481 and Diana Teeters of Bossier City, with 9,418. The stepladder finals are scheduled tonight. Heroux scored regularly against Indianapolis before joining Ice in trade from Kalamazoo.

The smooth-skating winger, who lived off the Indianapolis Ice for four seasons, is making restitution to the International Hockey League franchise. He began his payments last week after being traded from amazoo to Indianapolis for Alex-andr Andrievski. The Ice are 2-0 with Heroux in the lineup. Before he arrived, they were 0-5.

4 Heroux figures to play a prominent role this week as the Ice face another three-games-in-three-nlghts assignment. Indianapolis plays at Peoria tonight (7:30, WNDE-1260 AM), is host to Kansas City Friday and travels to Kansas City Saturday. "I've always played well here I love this big rink," Heroux said Wednesday prior to Joining his teammates for practice. "Hopefully, I can do the same thing with the Ice." Last winter, Heroux scored 10 of his 38 goals against the Ice. The numbers were almost as good in three of the four previous seasons when he scored 41, 38 and 43 goals.

A friend of Heroux's talked him into going to training camp with Flint the following autumn. It was a good move. He scored 43 goals and 85 points that season. "Hockey was fun again," Heroux said.

"It's been fun ever since." Heroux is not a total stranger to his new teammates. He skated with Steve Dubinsky and Hugo Belanger last summer in Montreal, testing CCM skates, and worked with Dubinsky the three previous summers. Sutter was aware of the relationship and paired Heroux with the two rookies. "Basically, I'm on the Ice to try and help the two rookies," Heroux said. "I want to make sure things are OK for them.

Sergei Fedorov and Mark Howe had third-period goals for Detroit. Bob Blake, with an assist from Shawn McEachern and Wayne Gretzky, scored for the Kings. Gretzky finished with two assists, giving him nine multi-point games this season. The Kings (5-5-2), who dropped a 7-0 decision to the New York Islanders Tuesday night, now ae 1-4-1 on the road. Detroit (4-7) snapped a two-game losing streak.

PHILADELPHIA 5, OTTAWA 2 The visiting Flyers jumped to an early 3-0 lead and then scored twice late in the game for a victory. Rod Brind'Amour scored twice and Eric Lindros had a goal and an assist for the Flyers, who took over sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Division ahead of New Jersey with a record of 8-2. The Senators (1-5-1) got a goal and an assist from Russian rookie Alexei Yashin. Flyers goalie Tommy Soderstrom, who had lost both his previous starts this season, began the game but left due to dizziness after the- first period. Roussel got credit for the win despite allowing all the Ottawa goals, improving his record to 8-0.

WINNIPEG 4, TAMPA BAY 3 Defenseman Teppo Numminen scored his first goal of the season with 12:19 remaining in the third period to give the visiting Jets the victory. Numminen floated a wrist shot from the right point into the top left corner of the net, surprising Tampa Bay goaltend-er Daren Puppa, who was screened on the play. Numminen got the scoring chance when he knocked down a clearing pass along the boards. DALLAS 5, HARTFORD 1 Mike Modano scored his ninth and 10th goals of the season, leading the host Stars past the Whalers. Modano scored in the first and third periods and also added an assist.

Russ Courtnall and Grant Ledyard each had a goal and an assist as the Stars remained unbeaten at home (3-0-2). BUFFALO 5, CALGARY 3 Alexander Mogilny returned to action and helped the visiting Sabres end an eight-game winless streak. Mogilny, who scored 76 goals last season before breaking his ankle in the playoffs, scored a power-play goal in the first period as Buffalo won for the first time since an opening-night victory Oct. 7 at Boston.
