B6 THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR MONDAY, JANUARY 3, 1994 RECORD REVIEWS Musicians get into the Texas swing of things Asleep at the Wheel "Tribute to the Music of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, Liberty Records. Reviewed by staff writer John Hawn. 4r4rV7 AsleeP at the wheel has been trying to keep listeners dancing and swaying to Texas swing for more than 20 years. But bandleader Ray Benson has outdone himself here by recruiting a diverse group of 18 musicians from Garth Brooks to Lyle Lovett to Huey Lewis. All perform within the framework of Bob Wills-style fiddlin' and yodelin', yet all inject their personalities.

Brooks croons assuredly in Deep Water, Lovett characteristically blurts through Blues For Dixie, and Lewis reveals his musical roots in Nubbin' It. Jody Nix, Willie Nelson and Benson give a rollicking version of Ida Red (which supposedly served as the inspiration for Chuck E3erry's Maybelline and yes, there's a backbeat, you can't lose it.) Big Ball's in Cowtown (George Strait) and Corine, Corina (Brooks Dunn) should be big dance-hall favorites. Biggest disappointment is the omission of San Antonio Rose, but there are few quibbles with the 18 songs that made the final cut. If you're seeking an introduction to Western swing, then shake hands with Tribute. Heart "Desire Walks On, Capitol Records.

The disco-house Ecstasy is about as frenzied as this 10-track collection gets. Watley doesn't try to be anything other than the stylist she is, singing adequately when necessary but mostly stressing her stoic middle register.

She talks her way through When a Man Loves a Woman, not to be confused with the Percy Sledge chestnut: "He'll do most anything satisfy her desires and quench her every thirst rub her back, maybe kiss her feet." Workin'on a Groove, co-written by Watley and boyfriend Andre Cy-mone, is an instantly accessible musical hybrid of the Rascals' Groovin' and Tommy James and the Shon-dells' Crystal Blue Persuasion. Your Love Keeps Working on Me recalls Shalamar's 1981 A Night to Remember. There also are several nice ballads: Take Me in Your Arms, Best nfMe and To Be With You. Adrian Legg "Wine, Women and Waltz, "Relativity Records. Reviewed by staff writer Steve Hall.

Guitarist Adrian Legg's playing is listening to the aural equivalent of a waterfall. Streams of notes cascade over each other with sometimes remarkable speed and frequency. On this release of waltzes (some new, others alternate takes from such efforts as Guitars and Cathedrals), he's playing in a fairly fast triple meter. But the end result's always tranquil arpeggios swarming like fireflies on a summer night. This is New Age guitar, a collection in which the overall mood is far more important than the melodicism of individual pieces.

Legg succeeds at soothing, yet it's far less memorable than the hell-for-leather country licks, classical suites and bluegrassy excursions of his last release, Mrs. Crowe's Blue Waltz. line highlight is Legg's offbeat interpretation of the Christmas carol Silent Night. It begins in a country vein, with melancholy string-bending, and the melody climbs up and down busy stairways of quick, shimmering notes. It's pretty to listen to, but it'd be distracting to sing along with.

Good thing Legg's an instrumentalist. 7 ADOAM'S FAMILY VALUES 5 00 BATMAN MASK OF THE PHANTASM 1:15 3 30 5 00 7:15 PQ13 PG A PERFECT WORLD 9 35 PG13 GHOST IN THE MACHINE 12:30 3:15 7:10 9:30 MRS. Unfortunately, there's almost nothing new on Desire Walks On. Back on Black II, which opens the disc, is pretty much a rehash of the original song. Will You Be There sounds like the retelling of All I Want To Do Is Make Love To You, and In Walks the Night is almost These Dreams Part II. The most striking cut and pretty much the only saving grace for the album is a cover of Bob Dylan's Ring Them Bells, which features a guest vocal from Alice in Chains' Layne Staley. Heart's arrangement sounds just like a Christmas carol and that's probably the only bit of inspiration to be found here.

Reviewed by staff writer Scott Miley. i 1 JL The Violent Femmes, long dissatisfied with their record label, say goodbye to Slash Warner Bros, with an eclectic "get lost." The band chose the selections some riveting and unexpected to cast their usually poppish selves in a more sexual and political light. Punk angst is sung in harmony in the previously unreleased I Hate the TV, rabid guitars help define a nation of hypocrites in America Is and Gordon Gano sings of death in the ambling Johnny, recorded in a cafe.

Musically, country gospel swings on Jesus Walking on the Water, a river-boat banjo turns into a sparkling sitar jam on the everywhere-l-look-l-see Lies and Brian Ritchie immerses himself in a xylophone standout in Gone Daddy Gone. But the trio's roots are also painfully evident. In the early works, you can hear them mimic the Beatles, B-52s, Talking Heads and Lou Reed before the group finds its own spirit. So the selections may not be the best introduction for non-Femmes fans; fans will like the approach. But the purpose of adding it all up is to open the dimensions for the trio as it heads to Elektra Records.

JeffBeal "Three Graces, Triloka Records. Reviewed by staff writer Jay Harvey. A i -j With a title suggesting Greek mythology, though the booklet alludes to the Bible's "faith, hope and charity," this disc requires a bit too much of all three qualities in the listener. It's appealing in a way that suggests the "soft jazz" that it must be considered only a notch or two above. In a program of 10 originals, trumpeterflugelhornist Jeff Beal exhibits a self-contained mastery of his own rather wispy compositional ideas.

His competent sidemen, who include drummer Dave Weckl, pianist John Beasley and bassist John Patitucci, are thoroughly supportive. A couple of outstanding solos come from guitarist Steve Cardenas, but otherwise most of the focus is on Beal's horn. As a composer, Beal favors airy themes over nervous ostinato patterns or bop-inspired essays that tend to be irresolute. The best composition is the apparent Gillespie tribute Dizzy Spells, with its effective muted trumpet and tenor sax (Steve Tavaglione) theme played in unison, kicked into high gear by driving percussion from Weckl.
