By Greg Seiter STAR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT Quarterback John Whitcomb completed 21 of 31 passes for 380 yards and four touchdowns Saturday as Alabama-Birmingham rode a 24-point second half to a 31-27 come-from-behind victory over Butler. Butler quarterback Jason Stahl completed 23 of 38 passes for 326 yards and three touchdowns, but it wasn't enough. Whitcomb completed 14 of 17 passes in the second half, erasing a 14-point halftime deficit before a crowd of 1,047 at Butler Bowl. Whitcomb connected with primary receiver Derrick Ingram nine times for 194 yards and two touchdowns.

Butler took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when Stahl connected with senior Kevin Grlbbins on a 24-yard touchdown pass. Bulldog running back Richard Johnson made it 14-0 on a 2-yard run with 11:51 remaining In the second quarter. Johnson finished with 146 yards on 39 carries. The Blazers moved 85 yards on four plays as Whitcomb connected with Ingram on a 66-yard touchdown bomb that brought Alabama-Birmingham to within seven 2:53 before the half. But the Bulldogs responded with a 54-yard drive, highlighted by a 23-yard touchdown pass from Stahl to Grlbbins.
