Mia: Anyone who participates in any sport can use strong ankles. My ideas may add a new twist to your workout and reduce your risk of twisting an ankle. Most important: Always warm up first. • Heel raises: Stand with feet parallel, shoulder-width apart. Extend off the ground onto the balls of your feet, as if on tiptoes. Do 10 reps, rest, repeat. • Towel drags: Put a medium-sized towel on the floor. At one end, place a weighted object (a large book or small weight). Standing, use the ball of your foot to drag the free end of the towel toward you. Maintain pressure with the ball of your foot. You can slightly lift your heel to help push and drag the towel in all directions. Experiment with what's comfortable. • Resistance training: Sitting, have someone push moderately on the inside of your foot as you try to push against his or her hand. Repeat 10 times. Push in all directions; alternate between flexing and pointing your toes. Q: My husband and I regularly walk 5 miles In 1.5 hours. Halfway through, he likes to stop and stretch. Is that necessary if we stretch beforehand? Also, he insists running is a better workout than walking. I disagree. Please set us straight. Laura Taveras, Salem, N.H. George: This is my kind of question! Many workout couples face this dilemma. Your loved one helps motivate you, but sometimes you need to compromise for the sake of a greater cause. My marriage is one of those greater causes! When my wife, Joan, and I walk together, there are times (and 1 used to be ashamed of this) when I'm tired, feel stiff or get off my pace. At those times, it's only smart to stop and stretch. It took me years to tell her, midway, "Well, just 14 USA WEEKEND • June 12-14,1B98 go on, dear." She slows her pace and I catch up later. Remember: You're not competing; you're doing this for life. As for the classic showdown between running and walking, I've said before: Pound for pound, walking is the best exercise. Running is great if your husband can do it without needing painkillers. If he's pain-free, I'd encourage him to do it on his own. But I predict he'll be back, because — to borrow a saying from boxing legend Joe Louis — he can run, but he can't hide from walking, d GET IN GEAR BV TERRY BYRNE How can this palm-sized novelty make your workouts more efficient - and leave you with fewer aches? The trick's in the thumbs, says Stephen Tamaribuchi, developer of the new "e3 Fitness Grip." With hands in proper position, especially the thumbs, any movement can be more ergonomically correct and powerful. Studies have shown that gripping it while running can straighten your gait; holding it in your "idle" hand while playing tennis strengthens your serve. How? The natural grip aligns and balances other muscle groups, reducing strain. Or grip to relieve stress and tired hands at work. For info, call 1-888-590-4747 ($39.95 a pair).
