Rain -1 1 PEOPLE BASINGER BALDWIN Star aids man's best friend EAST MILLSTONE, N.J. — A lab that caught Kim Basinger's attention when it planned to break the legs of beagles to test an osteoporosis drug has been charged with violating the Animal Welfare Act. The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced 23 charges Wednesday against Huntingdon Life Sciences Inc., alleging everything from lax record-keeping to failure to provide adequate veterinary cafe. Basinger asked the lab in July to turn the dogs over to her. In September, the lab gave 40 beagles to shelters for adoption.! Sword is mightier in this role NEW YORK — Swordplay in movie star Alec Baldwin's stage performance of "Macbeth" turned into a bloodletting. Baldwin nearly sliced off one of Jeff Nordling's fingers in the play's climactic duel at Greenwich Village's Public Theater on March 27. Baldwin's rapier ripped through Nordling's thick glove and sent the thespian backstage. The theater said Nordling got six stitches and was back on stage the next day. The production's six-week run is over. LeBlanc is lost in obscurity NEW YORK — Matt LeBlanc is feeling obscure, despite a top 10 television show and a new movie. "I sometimes get this washed-up, ex- rocker feeling, like someone that used to be in the limelight but now is just lying low," he said in the May issue of US magazine. LeBlanc, 30, was talking about how he and his friends on "Friends" are no longer on every magazine cover in sight. "If I'm ever again involved in a project whose path is as golden from edge to edge, top to bottom, front to back, as 'Friends,' it'll be a miracle," said LeBlanc. He plays pilot Don West in the upcoming movie remake of the old TV series "Lost in Space." Gere promotes Dalai Lama NEW DELHI, India — Richard Gere met with Indian students Thursday and urged them to support the Dalai Lama. Gere said he's been trying to go to China to promote his views to the communist government. "Yes, I would love to, but I can't get a visa. For four years they haven't allowed me into the country," Gere said. From Wire Service Reports T ADVICE Readers take on issue of caring for aging parents Dear Ann Landers: This is for the woman who cared for her' parents for four years while her siblings did nothing. Her complaint sounds like the ^ five years I spent caring for my mother in my home with no help from my sister. After three years of 'round-the-clock duty, I thought it would be a nice break if I could take a bus trip with fellow church members. I asked my sister if she would take care of Mom in my absence. Her reply was "Absolutely not. I can't do it. Too _ much stress." She refused to discuss the matter any further and hung up on me. I cried for two days and canceled my trip. I knew then that I would have to take care of my mother for the rest of her life, and I couldn't look to ANN LANDERS Creators Syndicate Inc. anyone to help me. Two years later, my health failed, and I collapsed from exhaustion and depression. I was advised by my doctor to put Mom in a nursing home immediately. Fortunately, I found one that would take her. Almost two years have passed, and it has taken me this long to feel like a normal person again. I am now 75 years old. My mother is 98 and still going strong. Please tell that woman who wrote to you to get help — and get it now — or her mother may outlast her, which is what might happen to me. — No Way Out in Memphis Dear Memphis: There are no medals for heroines like you. Telling you what you should have done years ago will not help now but spelling it out might help others who may soon be in your shoes. Thanks for writing. The letter that follows is from a remarkable woman. Her timing was perfect. TV TONIGHT Dear Ann Landers: I wrote this letter to my children and decided to send it to you with the hope that you would print it. It might help other seniors and make life a great deal easier for their children. Thanks, Ann, for so many years of good advice. — Longtime Reader in Alpena, Mich. Dear Alpena Reader: Your letter to your children is beautiful. What a fabulous lady you are! I hope a great many seniors will clip it out and follow your splendid example. Here it is: "My dear children: I love you very much, and I know you love me. This is the way I have planned the rest of my life, and I hope you will honor my wishes. "I intend to live in my home until taking care of it is more than I am able to do. I will then move into a small apartment. When I need to be cared for, I will enter an adult-care home. When I say, 'This is what I want,' I mean it. You may think I am stubborn, but please think of me as being determined. "I am now 84 years of age, and you know that I have had a wonderful life. I don't want to spoil yours. I insist that you live yours to the hilt. Travel! Enjoy yourselves! I do not want to move in with a,ny of you. Please don't try to talk me into it. These are my orders, and I insist that you follow them. I love you all very much. — Your Mother" Dear Readers: This is Ann again.' Is that a terrific mom or what? She is truly a role model for all seniors. Dear Ann Landers: Why do people who didn't sleep well the night before feel the need to tell you about it? You can't help them, and the topic is boring. Please print this. It might cut down on senseless banter. — San Francisco Dear San Francisco: Here's your request but don't expect it to make a difference. Chronic complainers are incurable, and they are forever in search of an audience. 4/3/98 HPBS, Bunker Hill-Hays O NBC, Wichita UFOX, WIchlta-Sallna OCBS, Topeka fcl Access 6, Saiina Q FOX, Kansas City QPBS, Wlchlta-Hutchlnson El ABC.
