THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 1993 E7 Powell gets Reds call, But finishes with loss By Dave Garlick STAR STAFF WRITER All In all, It was a pretty good day for Ross Powell. Sure, he lost his final outing for the Indianapolis Indians. But then he found out after the game that he will join the parent Cincinnati Reds Saturday after the major-league rosters expand to 40. Still, Tuesday's 5-4 loss to Nashville wasn't exactly the outing he wanted to go up on. The left-hander allowed Just three,; hits in his six innings of work, yet he walked eight batters an&gave up two home runs and fourruns. "I wanted to end on a positive note," said Powell. "I wasn't sure that'i would be going up. Bomby (maftger Marc Bombard) said there"was a chance, but I didn't khow for sure until after the game. ' vT' felt great awesome warming up, but it was a matter of getting my pitches up. Sometimes I think I work better when I'm a little tired. It forces me to work harder and get the ball down." , . As the eight walks will attest, Ppwell didn't have a good handle on where the ball was going, though he was throwing hard. As it turned out, two of the walks hurt him, both to Joe Hall. Potypll issued bases on balls to open; both the fourth and sixth innings. , In. the fourth, Chris Cron fol- '. lowed with a home run that made it-2-6. In the sixth, Powell came back to fan Cron, but Ron Coomer drove his 12th homer of the year ;tJmakeit4-0. , -"With a good hitting club like that,' you can't put that many run- ; ners on base," said Bombard, who watched Brad Moore walk a Nashville hitter in the ninth for the ; club's ninth walk of the evening. "We got away with seven of the walks, but not nine." Still, the Indians got back in the game as Razor Shines drove in a run with a double to make It 4-1 In the sixth. A Keith Hughes homer cut the Nashville lead in half in. the eighth off starter James Baldwin (4-4). Nashville got what turned out to be: SZ big insurance run in the ninth when Mike Huff hit a homer off Moore. The Sounds who have already clinched the American Association Eastern Division crown Just survived an Indians' rally in the ninth as Gary Varsho's two-run double made it 5-4. Brian Drahmen got Junior No-boa to tap to the mound, and after a wallk to Hughes, he got Shines to fly out to drop the Indians into a third-place tie with Louisville. That left Powell with a 10-10 record and a 4.11 earned run average, not bad considering he was 4-7 with a 5.31 ERA on June 15. lThe most important thing about my season was I became mdrtf consistent from the middle ofjjune on," said Powell. "I learned I couldn't Just get by with good stuff. I have to be able to use my breaking pitches and location to be successful. "I'm Just going to go up there and-work hard and hope to make the'mostofit." ' Joining Powell in Cincinnati Saturday will be left-hander Scott Ruskln, who leads the American Association with 28 saves. Catcher Dan Wilson and Var- sho will join the Reds Tuesday after the Tribe finishes the season Monday at Louisville. ' Tonight (7:15 p.m., WIRE 100,9-FM) Bo Kennedy (3-5) will piteh-against Steve Schrenk (5-8) forlh'e Chicago White Sox affiliate on Gleaner's Food Bank of IndianaWashington Township Fire Department Night. Three dollars of every ticket sold by a fire department will go to the food bank. Razor Shines Day - the Indians have announced that Saturday's pre-game ceremonies for Razor Shines will start at 4:15 p.m., 45 minutes before game time. " In addition to a 1993 Chevrolet from": Payton Wells Chevrolet, Shines will be inducted to the Indians' Wall of Fame in Bush Stadium "and receive a "Sagamore of ThaWabash" from Governor Evanayh's office.
