THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR SUNDAY, JULY 11, 1993 E11 'l AUTO RACING Prost bumps teammate off pole fN if, The German borrowed Rlccardo Patrese's Benetton Ford after his vehicle spun off on only his third lap. Patrese already had posted a time good enough for fifth place behind Senna, in a McLaren Ford. On a day when all times were considerably faster than Friday's practice, which was held In wet conditions, Senna's best lap was 1:21.986 and Patrese's 1:22.364. Senna slipped to sixth after his early laps but came out again late In the session and moved up to fourth. Former Indy Car champion Michael Andrettl, in another McLaren Ford, was llth-fastest at 1:23.114.

Although Hill was beaten for the pole by his teammate, the fans, hoping for another British victory after Nigel Mansell's triumph last year, had plenty more to cheer about. The other four Britons all placed In the leading nine, with Martin Brundle taking sixth on the grid, Johnny Herbert seventh, Derek Warwick eighth and Martin Blundell ninth. Senna, took the pole from Hill on his 10th practice lap. He silenced the cheers for Hill by racing around the Sllverstone circuit in 1 minute, 19.006 seconds, after the Briton had clocked 1:19.134. The only Grand Prix this season In which Prost has not won the pole was last week's at Magny Cours, France, in front of his own fans.

That time it was Hill's turn. Although Prost Is favored in today's race, he does not share the bookmakers' confidence in him. "It will be very close," he said. "It Is going to be very difficult to give 100 percent for the whole distance because it is such a demanding circuit physically. "When we came here for testing, I was never completely happy or confident with the car.

Silver-stone is a fast circuit with fast corners and you have to have complete confidence." Michael Schumacher, who finished third last week behind Prost and Hill, also placed third In qualifying Saturday at 1:20.401, Ironically In his teammate's car. Hill dropped to second for British Grand Prix. By Robert Millward ASSOCIATED PRESS Sllverstone, England Damon Hill waved to his army of fans Saturday after hearing he was in the pole position for the British Grand Prix. Then teammate Alain Prost halted the British celebration by snatching It from him. Prost, the former three-time world champion, won his eighth pole position in nine races this season, only two minutes after Hill's best lap.

"Alain was not going to take it lying down," said Hill, who had the pole at last week's French Grand Prix. "I think he also took it personally that I did it to him last week in France. Now he has done it to me." The Frenchman, who did not race last season but leads this year's drivers' championship by 12 points over Brazilian Ayrton 1 sPyTvsHto leads all the way in Masters sports car racer Bob Akin advanced to the final round of the series in the opening night of the series. David Hobbs and Brian Redman, both veterans of sports car competition, have also advanced to the final. Participants In the fourth race in the series scheduled for next Saturday Include actor Paul Newman and two-time world sports car champion Derek Bell.

Parnelli Jones Associated Press Clermont, Ind. Parnelli Jones, winner of the 1963 Indianapolis 500, started from the pole Saturday and led all the way to win the eight-lap feature at the third Fast Masters race at Indianapolis Raceway Park. Jones, 60, and drag racer Eddie Hill, 57, advanced to the Aug. 21 finals of the racing series for drivers 50 and over. Jones qualified for the pole by completing one lap on the three-quarter mile modified road course in 33.443 seconds.

Hill, meanwhile, was only the fifth quickest In qualifying and had to win a five-lap semifinal to reach the championship race. NASCAR standout Hershel McGrlff, who finished third, challenged Jones early but fell back when he failed to negotiate the first turn chicane on an attempted pass. Bob Bondurant and Indy veteran Lloyd Ruby battled for second early, but their cars made contact on the final lap. Others who competed Saturday were Lennie Pond, Marvin Panch and two-time Indy 500 winner Rodger Ward. Pond finished second in the semifinal, followed by Panch and Ward.

"I honestly can't tell you what I'll be doing next season because right now I don't know," replied Unser prior to Saturday's qualifying.

"1 haven't had to go out and look for a ride and I'm talking to a lot of owners. "Hell, I'm talking to everybody and their sister." The Penske rumor has been the strongest of the summer but doesn't sound likely after speaking with the principals. "Roger's seats are full and he doesn't like to run three-car teams," continued Unser, who might just be unbeatable if he ever did hook up with The Captain's operation. "Paul (Tracy) is doing a good Job and Emerson is still going strong. There's no room for me." Asked about his hired help for next year, Penske responded, "I had my drivers signed up for 1994 and 1995 last year." As for the possibilities of Fittl-paldi or Tracy leaving and Unser coming aboard, Penske replied: "Nothing's Impossible, but what about Mansell? I might be interested in him.

TRACY Continued from Page 1 "Things went well for us today. We were quick this morning in practice and kept making changes that improved the car this afternoon," said Tracy, who lapped the 2.369-mile road circuit in 59.168 seconds (144.139 mph). "We got our fastest lap on my 11th lap after letting the tires cool off a little, and I couldn't be happier with how this car handles." Mansell, a four-time polesitter this season, turned a best lap of 59.403 seconds (143.569 mph) in the KmartHavoline '93 Lola-Ford to land on the outside of the front row. Fittlpaldi, the only other driver to better his old mark of 59.732 (142.778 mph). came through with a lap of 59.609 seconds (143.072 mph) in Penske's other Nigel Bennett-designed chassis to secure the third slot.

It's too soon to say, but I'm hoping to be signed with somebody the day after the last race at Laguna Seca." Galles after Kinser? Galles has a lot of things coo-kln' for '94, but he's got one idea that would make him a hero with open-wheeled fans across the country.

"If Al doesn't come back, I'd be real interested in Steve Kinser," said Galles, who will run Adrian Fernandez and Kevin Cogan for sure next year. "I've been looking at Steve seriously. We were going to test him at the end of last year. "He's a winner, has a lot of talent and I'd love to get Valvoline to go along." Kinser, the perennial World of Outlaw sprint car champion from Bloomington, is also sponsored by Valvoline. His lone Indy appearance back in 1981 came in an uncompetitive ride at the Speedway.

Galles said Conseco's Steve Hil-bert, and possibly actor Gene Hackman, will help fund Cogan's effort. van, in the Molson '93 Lola-Chevy, wound up sixth. Al Unser in the Valvoline '93 Lola-Chevy-C. starts In the seventh spot and rookie Mark Smith did a splendid job In his Craftsman '92 Penske-Chevy-B by nailing down the eighth slot. Smith, bumped late on the final day of time trials at Indy, bested Bobby Rahal (10th), Andrettl (11th), Raul Boesel (12th) and Arie Luyendyk (15th) in his year-old equipment.

Robby Gordon, plagued by a malfunctioning boost gauge all day, had to settle for 20th place on the grid in the Copenhagen '93 Lola-Ford. Herta wins Indy Lights pole Bryan Herta set a track record to win the pole for today's Firestone Indy Lights competition and was the lone American In the top four as Portugal's Pedro Chaves, Sweden's Fredrik Ekblom and France's Franck Freon composed the first two rows. in Slick 50 working hard together and it's paying off. We can catch Earnhardt in the points, but he's got to have problems. We could win the championship, but we could also finish out of the top 10." McLaughlin wins GN race Mike McLaughlin led the final nine laps Saturday on the way to victory In the Auto Palace-Slick 50 150 Busch Grand National North stock car race at New Hampshire International Speedway. The driver from Waterloo, N.Y., known as "Magic Shoes," added to his series lead with the win, beating Kelly Moore by one car length In the 150-lap event. Dick McCabe was third, followed by NASCAR Winston Cup star Ken Schrader and Greg Clark. looking for his first victory of the "I can tell you I've had four drivers talk to me about '94 and they're all good ones, but I don't have to make any decision now.

I know what I have." It's no secret Chip Ganassl is enamored with Unser and it's no secret Junior isn't thrilled with the '93 Lola but likes the fact Gansssi will field his own chassis (a Reynard) next year. "Ganassl's deal looks really good. I'd love to develop my own car and that makes it more attractive, for sure," said Unser, who spent his own money trying to keep the Galmer breathing. "I've talked with Chip and It's definitely a possibility." This is the final year of Mario's contract, and Mansell has an option with NewmanHaas. "I've talked with Carl," admitted Unser.

"Obviously, that's a real good team." Another wild card entry could be Rahal. "I think there's a future with that Honda engine," said Unser of Rahal's proposed power-plant for '94. "I don't know how much longer Bobby plans to drive, but I'd be interested in his deal." Of course, Valvoline looms large in this mix. Together with Unser and Galles, the fuel and oil company conquered Indy and the PPG Cup. "Rick (Galles) wants to keep happy with only one," said Fittlpaldi with a smile, referring to the fact there was no Friday practice (only two sessions Saturday).

"But our Marlboro car Is very good over all the bumps. "Tomorrow will be very difficult with all the heat, humidity and rough track and I'm looking forward to it." Stefan Johansson, looking for a result to equal his quick pace, continued to be fast by qualifying fourth fastest in the AMAX '93 Penske-Chevy-C with a lap of 60.409 seconds (141.178 mph). "We battled a boost problem all day and went the wrong way with our chassis, so overall 1 think we should be pleased to start fourth," said Johansson, whose right wrist was sore and heavily taped after banging wheels with Mario An-dretti In the morning. Scott Goodyear, struggling to regain his early-season form, managed to post the fifth quickest time in the Mackenzie '93 Lola-Ford, while Detroit winner Danny Sulli hind pole-winner Mark Martin, Sterling Marlin and rookie teammate Jeff Gordon in the 300-lap event, the first-ever Winston Cup race on the 1.058-mile New Hampshire International Speedway. A crowd of more than 60,000 is assured by advance ticket sales, despite the continuing heat wave that is expected to send the temperature soaring into the mld-90s during the race.

Besides the top four starters, other strong contenders today are expected to include Ricky Rudd, the third Hendrick driver, Ernie Irvan, Dale Jarrett and Earnhardt. Gordon has three top-five finishes In his last five starts, Including a pair of seconds, while Rudd, who will start 10th, has three straight top-10 finishes, including a win at Michigan. PramigaiMonroaGtl 4rW cvoioci! EXPIRES 73193 Associated Press Loudon, N.H. If life was like a movie script, Ken Schrader would win today's Slick 50 300. Schrader might win anyway, considering the way he has been running recently, with five top-five finishes in his last six starts. This week, a hearing panel lifted a four-race suspension against Schrader and car owner Joe Hendrick for using an illegal carburetor in qualifying for last Sunday's Pepsi 400 at Ken Schrader Daytona. His strong performances of late have moved Schrader from 13th to fifth in the Winston Cup standings, trailing leader Dale Earnhardt by a still formidable 365 points.

But missing four races would have ended any hopes Schrader had for his first series championship. "I've been getting ribbed a lot by everybody in the garage this week," Schrader said. "The fine was $10,000 and all the abuse you can take from your friends. Neither one bothered me. I'm here starting on the second row, and tfoat's what matters."
