14 SUNDAY, JUNE 13, 1999 THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR Videos New Releases Dresden in the Ages of Spldldor and Enlightenment HIP-ROLLING EFFECT: Singer Ricky Martin, a 27-year-old former member of the Latino teen group Menudo has been this country's musical "It Boy" since his appearance earlier this year in the Grammy Awards broadcast. RICKY MARTIN "Ricky Martin," Columbia Records. Reviewed by staff writer Diana Penner. If there's a more happy-snappy catchy melody out there now than LA vin' La Vida Loca, I don't know what it is. The trick is to limit your intake of this song so its effect continues to be to make you roll your hips as opposed to your eyes.

Ricky Martin, the former Menudo member who exploded into present-day Anglo consciousness with his show-stopping performance at this year's Grammys, is for now, at least irresistible. His pop tunes are melodic and eminently listenable. Don't expect much of an identifiable Latin beat, though. Even numbers like Spanish Eyes and Be Careful (Cuida-do Con Mi Corazon) (the latter a duet with Madonna) are simply universal pop. Martin can deliver a decent tortured power-ballad Private Emotion, with Meja, and Bella (She's All I Ever Had)) suitable for slow-dancing and fantasizing.

But he's flat-out electric on the big-production whooping dance numbers. If you aren't flailing your arms and shouting "Ale! Ale! Ale!" along with him on The Cup of Life, your fun receptors have been numbed somehow. LITTLE VOICE Jane Horrocks, from TVs Absolutely Fabulous, reveals an unexpected gift for imitating great voices in this British comedy about a young recluse who can sing exactly like Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland and Billie Holiday. Michael Caine plays the club promoter, down' on his luck, who dates the girl's mother (Brenda Blethyn), hears, Little Voice sing, and becomes obsessed with luring her onto the stage. Horrocks' show-stopping concert is absolutely fabulous.

R. DANCING AT LUGHNASA The five Mundy sisters and the out-of-wedlock son of one of them live in a cottage in rural Ireland in the 1930s, in such close quarters that only silence and routine make it bearable. Then their brother, a priest, returns from Africa and upsets the delicate balance with his vague but free-spirited observations. The young boy's father visits, and then he leaves to fight, in Spain, and a simpleminded sister runs away for a night to dance at a festival with the man she loves. PG.

G00S AND MONSTERS A bioplc about the last act in the life of director James Whale (Ian McKellen), who was openly homosexual in the 1930s and 1940s when most Hollywood gays stayed prudently in the closet. Now it is 1957, the old man is dying, and a hunky young yard man (Brendan Fraser) has come to cut the grass. Is there time and energy enough for one last love? Elegiac and atmospheric. Reviewed by staff writer Jim Johnson. Leading with Jonathan Brooke's ghostly reading of Simon and Garfun-kel's Bleecker Street, this release pays homage to the byway and the unforgettable music created there in the '60s. Executive producer Peter Gallaway notes: 'The concept behind Bleecker Street was to document the transition from folk music to folk-rock, and the transition through Dylan to the birth of the singer-songwriter." On this disc, contemporary artists such as Marshall Crenshaw, Chrissie Hynde, Jules Shear, John Cale (with Suzanne Vega) and Black 47 pay homage to the songs of Bob Dylan, Tim Buckley, John Sebastian, Leonard Cohen and Phil Ochs. Crenshaw's rendition of Dylan's My Back Pages is an almost note-for-note replication of the version recorded by the Byrds on Younger Than Yesterday. Loudon Wainwright III and Iris De-Ment's rollicking version of Richard and Mimi Farina's Pack Up Your Sorrows sounds like it could have been recorded by Gid Tanner and the Skillet Lick-ers during the '20s (that's a compliment, folks).

At the other end of the musical spectrum are Cale and Vega's spookily gothic take on Cohen's So Long Marianne and Black 4Ts fiery Celti-delic romp through Ain't Marching Anymore, Och's anti-war anthem. Star ratings: excellent; good; fair; poor BRANFORD MARSALIS "Requiem," Columbia Records. Reviewed by staff writer Jay Harvey. The somber title of the upbeat saxophonist's new CD reflects Branford Marsalis' grieving the death in December of Kenny Kirkland, his longtime pianist and friend. The music on this album isn't preoccupied with mourning, however.

Thafs not surprising, since most of it was set down before Kirk-land's death, caused by drug-related problems. The rapport Marsalis and Kirkland enjoyed for nearly 20 years is evident on Doctone, the opening cut, with the pianist typically energetic and inventive in his solo without having to throw off too many notes. If anything, it's Marsalis who's a bit prolix in the course of this program, allowing his technical fluency and ebullience to overtake Lykief and Elysium, for example. The latter is the focus of the release's tribute to Kirkland, recorded after his death by the remaining trio of Marsalis, bassist Eric Revis and drummer Jeff Tain" Watts. If hard to stay miffed at Marsalis, however, in the face of such a serene command of balladry as he shows in A Thousand Autumns.

If he sometimes wastes notes, he's a canny player apt to redeem any momentary excess with ample poise and wit. Marsalis will perform Saturday at Military Park as part of Indy Jazz Fest. 401 KXPJGAN ST INDIANAPOLIS wwwjmarlcaricarjar8ttliBatre.com CITIZEN KING "Mobile Estates," Warner Bros. Reviewed by staff writer Scott Bacon. Name a current act more versatile in styles than Beck.

Citizen King might just qualify, if it didn't appear this Milwaukee outfit was ripping off the moves of the hip-hop folkie. To be fair, Citizen King is more like California's Smash Mouth, performers with their cross hairs locked on mainstream radio accessibility. Matt Sims' vocals are unremarkable, and drum loops and the turntable stylings of Malcolm Michiles spice these 13 pop and hip-hop numbers. There is variety here, though it's like getting a fruit plate where only the melon and grapes are in season. Your satisfaction level will depend largely on the offering from which you last sampled.

Citizen King, with its monster radio hit Better Days (And the Bottom Dropped Out), may not finish out as one-hit wonders. Fans of the pop-coated rap hit will no doubt enjoy Long Walk Home, with its veritable yard sale of samples and gimmicky studio sound effects. The down-on-our-luck number Jalopy Style is straight out of the book of Beck, with its dreamy segues and turntable stylings. Hillbilly is a bucolic little romp that's amusing, to boot. And there are a few harmless numbers (Smokescreen, Checkout Line) that offer style but little substance.

Even with its shortcomings, Mobile Estates is summertime fluff that seems to be just what the DJ ordered.
