By David Benner STAR STAFF WRITER Nigel Mansell thanked USAC, Tony George and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, He believes his first Indianapolis 500 will be "marvelous," and called the event "mammoth, mighty" and "very impressive." The flowers, however, couldn't hide the dirt of Mansell's first qualification for the race, which landed him In the middle of the third row for the May 30 race.

Asked If he was disappointed with his 220.255 mph run, Mansell replied, "Absolutely." The defending Formula One champion who switched to Indy-car racing this season expects the best, but came up with something less Saturday afternoon in his Kmart Texaco Havoline Newman-Haas Racing Lola. Expecting speeds in the 222 range after practice Saturday morning, things took a turn downward when time trials opened. His first attempt got him a top speed of 219.984 and after three laps was waved off. The team decided to wait like others to run in the cooler late afternoon temperatures. That produced the final product, which got Mansell securely in the field but didn't do much for his competitive mind-set.

"I felt very optimistic of going well," said Mansell, probably the most-publicized IMS rookie (a misnomer if there ever was one) In track history. "I was advised we should go quicker in the evening and in fact we went three miles per hour slower (than the expected 222). "It was very frustrating because what happened was the car had the perfect balance at lunchtlme and could push the car through the turns and later I had a big push, big understeer and almost hit the wall coming out of 4 (on his third qualifying lap) because I couldn't get the front to turn. "I'm a little bit frustrated, very happy to have qualified but I thought we could do a little bit better." Mansell's four-lap ride was certainly an invigorating one. He tested the new rumble strips below the white line and on that third lap had a magnifying glass eye view of the wall.

"You push as hard as you can and you can only regrettably do what the car will allow you to do on a track like this. It's a great equalizer of drivers, it depends on your car, your engine. "I couldn't believe how the track had changed. We have to check the car over, but I had such a big understeer that It really impressed me and it Impressed the wall, too." Then, when cleared by his doctor, he'll return to Indianapolis for testing. "It's difficult, it really Is," he said of the concentration required at the Speedway. "It's a new education, but it's a great one. I'm very grateful for USAC, Tony George and the Indianapolis Speedway because they made this happen for me. I'm qualified now and it's all big thanks to them because if I couldn't have done my rookie test late (due to the back surgery), I wouldn't be here." But he is and Mansell's eager for his first Indy.

"The race will be something totally different," he said. "There will be a lot of race tactics and It will be my first ever 500 miles, which will be marvelous."
