"We've tried to do everything we can do to maximize our possibility for that. Hopefully we've done a good Job of it. "This is a race that can make your career, and that has been true for a lot of guys In the past. The money is nice, but that's not why I'm here.

I'm here because I want to be successful in this particular race." Both drivers feel Indebted to the program team owner Tom Kelley of Fort Wayne has provided. "This is a killer opportunity for me," Sharp said. "I think they do everything they need to do to give us a chance to be successful. That's all you can ask for in this business." Dismore said it would be nice to be able to give his owner something back. Like a victory today.

One thing weighing in the team's favor is that the drivers truly work together. They hope that relationship pays dividends. "So often teams are structured where unfortunately your teammate becomes your No. 1 competitor," Sharp said. "There's not a lot of rivalry that enters the team between Mark and me.

We really work together well." champ Kenny Brack probably should think about betting on himself; he's an astounding 35-1 at The Mirage. "I've got my own deal.

I'm going to line up behind these guys like a little duck lines up behind its mom, heading to the creek. "I have no intention of trying to win the Indianapolis 100. I want to make the car better every stop and the last 50 miles I want to be able to drive the (heck) out of it." Away from Indianapolis, Sharp and Dismore have been two of the most consistent drivers on the Indy Racing League circuit. In the first two races this year, each driver has recorded a pair of top-10 finishes. Sharp was fourth In Orlando and eighth in Phoenix; Dismore was sixth in Orlando and seventh in Phoenix.

Last year, Sharp had race wins at Phoenix and Dover. He had three other finishes in the top six. Dismore's best IRL finish was fifth last year at Orlando. Now they want to experience the same kind of success at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. wizardry gets NOTEBOOK tie.

For those accomplishments, Gian Paolo Dallara has received the Louis Schwitzer Award for automotive engineering at the Speedway. Dallara, a native of Parma, Italy, whose cars have been successful in many forms of European road racing, received a $5,000 award and a plaque. His name also will be Inscribed on the permanent trophy in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum. The award has been presented each year since 1967 by the Indiana Section of the Society of Automotive Engineers. Notes Ellseo Salazar received the Scott Brayton Award for perseverance and courage.

Defending IRL Inc. crs Mark Dismore, whose best finish at Indianapolis is 19th, says he has learned not to try to race for the lead right off the start.

race," he said. "Whether it's blown tires, spinning in someone else's oil or breaking a gearbox, which is what happened last year, it's just always something." Dismore's story is similar. His best finish in three 500s is 19th in 1996. In '97, he was 28th; last year, 27th. "Everything has to go right for you to be successful around here," Dismore said.

"You can't afford to have any little things go wrong. You need an error-free ride." At least at the start of today's race, Sharp and Dismore should be running in clean air. The Kelley Racing teammates are both starting from the second row Dismore in the middle and Sharp on the outside. Again, Dismore sees it from a bottom-line perspective. He says it Mechanical Cash awards, other mementos go to three mechanics, chassis designer Dallara.

By Robin Miller STAFF WRITER The mechanics took the spotlight Saturday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as Rob Stark, Kevin Her-tle and Owen Snyder were honored for their smarts and service. Stark, a 26-year Indy veteran from Los Angeles, is chief mechanic for the fastest rookie, John Hol-lansworth in today's Indianapolis 500. C. Tbcker Company, Realtors Since 1918 Congratulates PATTI HANEY RICHEY, on sales in excess of Drivers have learned the hard way how fortunes can crumble at the Speedway. By Terry Hutchens STAFF WRITER Scott Sharp and Mark Dismore consider themselves bottom-line people. To their way oi thinking, there are certain truths that exist at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this month: High speeds in practice are fine, but it's only practice. A good starting position can help, but it's a 500-mile race.

Past accomplishments sound good, but they mean next to nothing. For Sharp and Dismore, the bot tom line at the Indianapolis 500 is a lot of things need to go your way. Not to mention, you need a great deal of luck. The only luck Sharp has had in his first four Indianapolis 500 starts has been bad. He's finished 16th, 26th, 10th and 16th.
