FRIDAY, JULY 6, 1951 THE REGISTER-NEWS — MT. VERNON, ILLINOIS Roy Rogers, Free of Film Contract, To Tackle TV BV BOB THOMAS m Associated Press Staff Writer HOLLYWOOD, July 6. — Roy Rogers, free from his film contract after almost 14 years, is getting ready to shoot it oiij wilh Cassidy, Autry and the other television cowboys. The Cincinnati cowpokc's pact wilh Republic ended recently and he now has the right to appear on TV. I asked him if being off TV hurt him. "I don't think so," ho replied. V'l think it helped me. Now the Situation is less confusing. All the routine westerns have been played out and the audiences are looking for quality." ROGERS INDICATED that his TV competitors riami't hurt his popularity. He said that last year $21,000,000 worth of products bearing his name were sold—"It was our biggest year." There have been reports that the western star might sign again ^wjth Republic boss Herbert Yates. WBut although Rogers' lawyers are still talking about it, he doubts if he'll return to his old roping grounds. The situation was not aided when Yates announced that newcomer Rex Allen would be billed "The King of the Cowboys." "I thought that stunk," Roy remarked bitterly. "After all. I have held the box-office title for the last eight years and Allen hasn't even had a big picture out yet. That sort of thing just confuses •the public." HE WAS ALSO UPSET by reports that Yates will release old Rogers film for vehicles. "I'm suing him over that," Roy said. "And I think I've got a good case. My contract gave me all the commercial rights. And if selling pictures for sponsorship on TV isn't commercial, I don't know what it is." LITTLE EGYPT NEWS IN BRIEF By Aiscclnttd Prat* MOUNDS — The Rev. I. H. Frazier observed a whole row of vines growing both potatoes and tomatoes in his garden. The Minister commented simply: "With God, all things are possible." * » • * CENTRALIA — Southern Railway has bowed to those whose ears are offended by diesel train horns and who yearn for those old steam whistles. Eight of ten Southern freights passing Centralia have been equipped with new horns especially toned like those lonesome sounding whistles of steam trains. * * * * SPARTA — As farmer Murriel Uchtman looked on helplessly, lightning wiped out his seven milk cows with a single bolt. Uchtman out of his farm near Steeleville, reported: The cows huddled—with one poking its head through a steel fence—when the storm came. Lightning coursed along the fence and felled seven animals. An eighth knocked down, survived. » * * * WATERLOO — A group of persons, fined for fishing without a license, were shy the $10 and costs.
