TIME REGISTER-NEWS — MT. VERNON, ILLINOIS 1 THURSDAY, JULY 5, 195! Quit Draft Board Over Deferments For College Boys By Associated Press PEORIA, 111., July 5 — Two Peoria draft board members resigned today in protest against selective service program deferments for college students. The men who called the college draft deferment plan "Un-American" and said it "represents class discrimination" are William W. Finnell and Ralph E. Johnston, members of Board No. 109. Both are overseas veterans of World War II and college graduates. They mailed resignations to Paul Armstrong, state draft director. Armstrong said he received Finnell's letter and would answer it in due time. He made no other comment. Finnell wrote Armstrong asking "are these rights (of deferment) now to be limited to young men able economically to pursue higher education? If that is so, then education can be bought in preference to bearing arms. "Much of the timidity and uncertainty about the future apparent in draft age students originated in colleges and universities. These institutions have enjoyed tremendous prosperity since World War II due to the millions of veterans educated at government expense. "Now that the program is near- 1 ing an end, the educators are reluctant to reduce their expanded programs 'and plants to normal. Maintenance of huge student bodies comes before national defense." Johnston wrote that he was resigning because he is "against discrimination amongst college students on any young men of military age."
