Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Arkansas and West Virginia last year. One unusual feature of the Cat attack is that every player on the team is a scoring threat; in fact, the guards commonly outscore the rest of the team.

Last year's leading point producer was Jack Parkinson, captain and a guard. Others teams playing basketball in Louisville this season are described on pages 21-29. Over the years Rupp, a drawling, farm-loving Kansan, has picked up more aliases than a fugitive from the law. At various times he has been called "Old Rupp and Ready," "The Baron," "The Farmer" and "The Man in the Brown Suit." Assorted Southern sports writers often have referred to him by other names, many of which should be repeated before no group less calloused than a band of migrant mule skinners. But Rupp has' gone right on winning and the boys have found it difficult to find an alibi for success.

One reason no doubt is that he's always good for something to write about.

Some time back, to illustrate, a writer who wanted material for a column asked Rupp if he could suggest any changes in the game. "Yes," answered the Baron. "Put the center jump back, take the backboard and net off just leave the hoop up and raise the hoop five feet." The writer rushed away to set this amazing statement down. Later Rupp was asked by one of his players if he really felt that way. "Hell, no," he replied.

"But anything for a column." Just what some of the Southern writers have against Rupp isn't definite, unless it's the monotonous regularity of his wins over other Dixie teams. Many of them try to discredit him by pointing out that with the material Kentucky has available, even Mahatma Gandhi could put together a winning team. But there's more to a winning team than the mere raw ingredients. The players, even though all are stars, must be put together in the right combination, taught plays that will click and given the incentive that pulls close games out of the fire. Rupp is a master at these things.
