BOBBY RYDELL Bobby Rydell Says Some Success Is Better Than None By DON ROYAL NEW YORK — Bobby Rydell has arrived, in a semi-Urge way. He's big with the kid record buyers, of course. And he's attracting more and more adults, as when he appears on Perry Como's show and such. He's one of the teenage idols who really c»n sing. Whether or not he can really crack through remains to be seen. He'd like to act. One of his first attempts was a pilot film for a series, which never sold. You can see it on Vacation Playhouse CBS —Aug. 26 and judge for yourself why it didn't. Bobby Happy But even if he never gets any bigger than he is today, Bobby will be happy. He knows that he's come a long way and appreciates the amount of fame tie's already acquired. He comes from Philadelphia, which also spawned Frankie Avalon and FaVian, both a few years his senior. "When I was struggling to get started," Bobby recalls, "Fabe •was a big star. He lived only about a half-block from my house. I used to see the kids swarming around his stoop — we both Rved in one of those row houses — and I would wonder if that would ever happen to me." It did. While Bobby still lived in that house, he achieved enough fame so that kids hung around his stoop too — there were always 20 or so, plus dozens of phone calls every day. But that was a while in coming. He and his manager, Frankie Day, tried to start their own label at- first. It flopped; Bobby made three records and only his closest friends" and friendliest relatives bought them. So, unlike many of the young sensations, be wasn't an overnight smash. Appreciate* Succes* "I guess," he says, "I appreciate success more than most performers," Bobby's father was, he says, "a frustrated performer."
