Jewell; sister Dolly Jewell. Robert Starrett was director of the Indiana State Museum CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. Opal Humphreys Endicott, 93, Crawfords-ville, a retired teacher and historian, died July 10. Mrs. Endicott was head of the social studies department at Brownsburg High School, retiring in 1972.

Previously, she taught history, government, French and English In Indiana high schools 42 years, Including 17 years in Montgomery County. A charter member of Indiana Council for Social Studies, she was a member of the National and Central Indiana councils for social studies, Indiana State and Montgomery County historical societies and the Organization of American Historians. She also was a member of the American Association of University Women, Indiana State Teachers Association and Retired Teachers associations of Indiana and Montgomery County. During her teaching career, she was a Ball State and Purdue universities student teacher supervisor and served Elizabeth Kleine was instrumental in Hancock County special education ARTHUR MASCOE, 32, Greencastle, formerly of Indianapolis, died July 9. GUS W. MCCLENDON, 84, Indianapolis, died July 9. He was a courier 19 years for Bank One, retiring in 1989. Previously, he owned McClendon Chrysler-Plymouth for five years. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a 57-year member of Englewood Masonic Lodge.

Survivors: wife Edith W. Rowe McClendon; two grandsons. Robert D. Starrett, 90, Bradenton, formerly of Indianapolis, a retired director of the Indiana Stale Museum, died July 9. Mr.

Starrett moved to Indiana in 1946 when he started working for the Indiana Conservation Department as museum curator. Mr. Starrett described the position In an interview with The Indianapolis Mr. Starrett News as "a fancy name for someone who looks after things." He was then named director of the parks and memorials division In 1964. At the time, the Indiana State Museum was located In the basement of the Indiana Statehouse, and most of the artifacts were In storage.

Finding a new, larger home for the museum had been a priority for years, but a suitable location had not been found. Mr. Starrett was able to persuade city and state officials to move the museum to the old Indianapolis City Hall, where the museum stands today. After organizing the move of the museum, he was named director In 1966, a position he held until 1970. HUNTER LAWRENCE BAUGHMAN, Infant son of Ronald G.

"Under Bob's oversight, he Introduced professional museum standards to the Indiana State Museum," Gantz said.

Mr. Starrett later became assistant to the director of the division of state memorials and museums, retiring a short time later. Previously, Mr. Starrett worked for the National Park Service and the Carnegie Museum In Pittsburgh and was a Rockefeller Foundation Fellow for the Buffalo (N.Y.) Museum of Science. A 1933 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Mr.

Starrett began working In museums to help pay his tuition. He was a Sagamore of the Wabash. A Navy veteran of World War II, Mr. Starrett also was an analyst for the FBI during the war. Memorial contributions may be made to the Indianapolis State Museum Foundation.
