PAGE 18- THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR SATURDAY, MAY 26 Wa tson 's 2-Under 142 Good For 4-Shot Lead riNfl pi ify iia pion Jim Simons failed to qualify for the usual 7,101 yards to 7,004 because of the howling winds. There only was one other round under par this day that would be more typical of Scotland's Muirfield in November than Ohio's Muirfield Village in May. That was a 71 by Terry DlehJ, who had a 150 total. By way of contrast, Lee Trevino a notorious warm-weather player finished a round of 81 and announced he'd play no more in this tournament despite a 155 total, comfortably in the cut for the final two rounds. That's 11 over par.

The previous high cut figure for the tour year was 5 over par. MORE THAN one-third of the field failed to break 80. The scores ranged up to a 92 20 over par by Roger Maltbie, who won the first Memorial tournament in 1976. Arnold Palmer was 81-156. Hale Irwin was 80-153.

U.S. Open champ Andy North shot 76-155. Masters champ Fuzzy Zoeller had 74-153. PGA titleholder John Mahaf-fey was 78-156. Jerry Pate was 85-158.

Andy Bean was 82-158. Defending cham- Dublin, Ohio (AP) With the wind-chill factor announced at 13 degrees, Tom Watson fought his way through cold, wind and rain to an incredible, no-bogey, 3-under-par 69 that gave him 4-stroke command Friday in the second round of the Memorial Golf Tournament. "One of the best rounds I've ever played," said a deeply satisfied Watson, the only man in the elite, invitational field able to escape without a bogey in the dreadfully difficult conditions. A steady, drizzling rain was whipped by winds gusting to 40 mph. The temperature hung around 42 degrees.

"I GOT AWAY with a good round today," said Watson, the year's leading money-winner and gunning for a fourth title of the season. "I didn't make many mistakes. It's hard not to look at all the trouble out there. But I combatted it pretty well." His 142 total, 2 under par, was the only subpar total for two trips over Jack Nicklaus' Muirfield Village Golf Club course, which was shortened from its "1 reference to the fact Carter qualified under the old USAC wastegate rules governing the size of the exhaust opening and was bumped from the starting field. Carter is expected to be among this morning's potential qualifiers.

This sign was in Aeros Bring Halt To Indians' Streak Dodgers Rip Reds, In Literal Slug Fest By SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT Wichita, Kans. Chuck Rogers pitched Wichita's third complete game of the season and Joe Hernandez and Mike Godon hit home runs as the Aeros snapped a five-game Indianapolis Indians winning streak with a 6-1 victory here Friday night. The win opened a five-game series between Indianapolis and the Aeros which resumes with an American Association double bill tonight. Gordon slammed the door on the Indians with a three-run homer off reliever Mario Soto in the eighth inning after Hernandez had hit a solo shot in the sixth off Indians' starter David Moore. Soto took over for Moore after the latter gave way to a pinch hitter in the eighth.

INDIANAPOLIS CATCHER Tom Mutz slammed a 320-foot solo homer over the right field wall in the fourth which temporarily tied the game at 1-1. The Aeros had jumped in front in the second on a single by Steve Macko, a stolen base and a run-scoring single by Gordon. The Indians managed to get just one base runner safely to second base and that was Mutz on his circuit clout. Aeros Manager Jack Hiatt termed Rogers' performance outstanding. He was mixing up his pitches well and keeping his fast ball and slider down, Hiatt said.

He did hang one curve bell to Mutz in the fourth, N. L. Baseball Cubs 3, Phils 0 Philadelphia (AP) Barry Footed two-run homer in the fourth keyed a 3-0 victory for the Chicago Cubs over the Philadelphia Phillies Friday night as Lynn McGlothen and Bruce Sutter teamed up on a four-hitter. Bill Buckner, who had four hits including a pair of doubles scored the Cubs' first run in the third after his first double and Dave Kingman's RBI single. McGlothen (5-5) gave up four hits, struck out six and walked one before needing Sutter's relief help with none out in the ninth.

Philadelphia starter Nino Espinosa (54) was the loser. Buckner's first double came after Espinosa struck out the first two batters in the third and left-fielder Greg Luzinski's throw was short and wide of the plate following Kingman's hit. Padres 2, Astros 1 San Diego (AP) Dave Briggs drove in Gene Richards with a lOth-inning sacrifice fly to lift the San Diego Padres to a 2-1 decision over the Houston Astros Friday night. final two rounds at a-is. "It was a day when 75 or 76 was a pretty good score," observed Watson generally regarded as the man most likely to succeed host Nicklaus as golf's No.

1 performer. He was bundled into a rain suit on top of a shirt and two sweaters, one of which he purchased in a hasty trip to a shopping center just Detore leemg ott. "These have been two of the most difficult days to play golf I can rernem ber in a long, long time," said Nicklaus who said he was pleased with his round of 73 that left him in a tie for second at 146, 2 over par. HE SHED his big, bright-red mittens lone enough to birdie the last two holes one of which scored on a shot out of casual water at the bottom of a fairway bunker. He was 3 over par before that and then followed with an 18-foot birdie Dutt on the final hole.

"That turned a decent round, under the conditions, into a good round, under the conditions," Nick laus said. He was tied with Tom Kite and Peter Jacobsen, who got into the tournament a the fourth alternate. Each had varied adventures. Kite shot a 72 but had to hole a 133- vard. 9-iron shot for an eagle-2 to do it and three times got it up and down from 100-120 yards short of the green.

"I think you 11 find that fairly typical, he said "It was orutai out tnere. i leei nice drowned rat." Jacobsen shot 74 and had an even greater struggle. He hit only 6 greens in regulation and used oruy putts. Veteran Miller Barber was next at 73- 147. Lanny Wadkins, a two-time winner this year and the tirst-round leader nere blew to a 79-148.

WATSON'S round, under the condi tions. was little short of unbelievable. He missed only two greens and got it up and down on both of those holes. Only on the 12th was he in real danger of making a bogey, but holed a 10-foot putt for oar. He coaxed in one from about 30 feet for birdie on the fifth hole, scored from 10 feet on the eighth and closed out his round with a 7-iron shot to eight feet for closing birdie on the 18th hole.

USAC Midgets, At IRP, 'Drome In Extravaganza The United States Auto Club's midget division faces a busy schedule Saturday with a pair of shows at Indianapolis Raceway Park this afternoon and another extravaganza tonight at the Indianapolis Speedrome. In between, the Mini-Indy super vees will make their debut on a short-oval track when they share the IRP program. The IRP format calls for hot laps from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., with time trials running until 3 p.m. The midgets will run their initial 50-lapper at 4 o'clock, followed by the 100-kilometer super vee race at 5 and the 50-lap midget finale will hopefully get underway around 6. THEN, UNDER police escort, the midcet troupe will speed across town for 162 laps of racing on John Stiles' exciting bull ring.

There will be a pair of 50-lap features with two, 18-lap, non-qualifiers' races spiced in between and an additional 12-lap semi. Both midget purses at each track are $10,000 and combined with the 'Drome's $1,000 consolation prizes it will provide the midgets with their biggest payday in seven years. There are over 85 entries for the midget mayhem, with Indy's Steve Lot-shaw atop the point standings. Rapid Rich Vogler, Gary Bettenhausen, Bob Wente, Billy Cassella, Sleepy Tripp, Chuck Gurney, Jerry Weeks and five-time champ Mel Kenyon are among the front-runners that will be competing. Vogler, last year's midget titlist, will be doing double duty in the super vees where he currently rests No.

2 in the points behind Dennis Firestone. Bettenhausen Is also scheduled to run the Minl-Indys, along with Jack Brabham's son, Geoff. Former "Nite Before The 500" victors like Johnnie Parsons, Sam Hanks, and Lee Kunzman will be honored in special ceremonies during the evening. This will be the 34th consecutive year the midgets have preceeded the Indianapolis 500 and they usually run at night. But since the light bill at IRP has skyrocketed, the card has been billed as the "Day Before The 500." 9 88 1.75 Litres, 59.2 oz.

Morgan, winner of the Nigeria and Lusaka Opens earlier this year, holds a one-stroke advantage over South Africa's Robbie Stewart and a two-stroke lead over New Zealand's Terry Kendall and Britain Ken Brown.

They were the only players to better the par of 72 on a wet and windy day. Morgan had a total of eight single putts, ranging from five to 20 feet in a round which included seven birdies. Stewart, who turned 26 last Sunday, finished late in the day when the conditions were much calmer and birdies at the last three holes enabled him to record a 70. STAR SPECIAL REPORT Columbus, Ohio The Indy Daredevils were left "all wet" in more ways than one Friday night dropping a 4-2 American Soccer League decision to the Columbus Magic here in wind-swept, rain-soaked County Stadium. "We are not used to playing on as-troturf," explained Devils Coach Sam Donnelly, following Indy's fourth loss against only two victories and three ties.
