FIELDER COOK Fielder Cook Sees Plenty of TV Room For Filmed Shows By JOAN CROSBY NEW YORK—The way Fielder Cook sees television, there to plenty of room for filmed shows. Cook, a producer-director who works in the live or taped area of television, is even willing td allot 90 per cent of the evening viewing hours to filmed show*. Three-Hour Minimum "But there should be," he adds, "a minir.:um of three hours a week, spread ov*.r the three networks, for live or taped drama." Cook, and his Director's Company partner, Franklin Schaffner, will be turning out seven shows for next season's Show of the Week series. And Show of the -Week is the only regular series still around using living taped shows. "To say that Ben Casey, Dr. Kildare and The Defenders—the three best produced film shows —don't turn out, on a weekly •' basis, better shows than Ralph Bellamy's old Man Against Crime series is wrong. But there should be—and some people • won't know this uctil it disappears—room for the live-oo-tape shows. > "If I were in charge of a network, I would take my best film show and schedule it alongside a live or taped drama. It would • look better and the audience ' would have a better taste of both methods. Economically, there i* no way for a network to make a nickel out of live drama shows. ' If Playhouse 90 were on today, every minute would have to be sold for the network to come out even, and under thorn circumstances, they would still be lucky if they did. So economically, I can't blame them." Cook, a tall, attractive native of Waynesboro, Va., was raised in Florida and Virginia. He sayt he had no goal during his early years. "I just wanted my B. A- in English literature from Washington and Lee. Then the war came and I went away for a couple of years." Loved Radio, Moviei By the time Fielder was discharged from service, be says his ambition was "to get out of school." He loved radio and the movies, so he decided to take a course at Columbia's School of Raio. "I found out it was night school and I had to get a job. That's when I heard of a strange thing called an advertising agency. So I joined J. Walter Thompson, and was with them eight years." Cook began as a messenger and ended up an assistant to the producer of the Kraft Theater. "One day I walked into a rehearsal hall \ to deliver a message. I looked around and said to myself 'Here is where I belong. * " Does Fielder have any regrets that fate led him into producing and directing? "I enjoy the work immensely. But you know, the most reasonable explanation of why anyone enters show business is that he is unfit for any other kind of activity. I wouldn't be anywhere else. Neither could I make a nickel anywhere else,"
