TF ANYONE DOESN'T believe in the power of A suggest ion. he should pay attention here for the next few paragraphs. Many residents of the circle city are currently talking about the possibilities of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway staging a doubleheader this Labor Day weekend.

Since no one from the IMS side has said "yea" or 'nay" at this moment, its still just a lot of chatter. Early last week, after it was learned that Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) had secured the United States Auto Club's' 500-miler at Ontario Sept. 2. USAC tech chief Jack Beckley strolled into the L'SAC 'office and queried, "Hey, did anyone hear about our 500 kilomoter race at the Speedway Sept. OF COLRSE nobody had.

since Jack was speaking with his tongue in his cheek, trying to stir some smiles from the secretaries. But little' did he know that he'd planted the first seeds of a rumor that could become a very historical fact before the week is out. The following afternoon, a group of racing folks was huddled in the golfers' lounge of the Speedwav Motel kibitzing with IMS supermtendant Charlie Thompson about how much tickets should be priced, how many people might show up and how many races would be run. They too. were just passing time and hot air.

or so it seemed. Sometime between last Tuesday and Thursday, the wind of gossip blew the story down to Houston where it caught Anthony Joseph Foyt's ears. The four-time Indy winner doesn't want his season to end Aug. 12 that's the last one at Milwaukee as the schedule stands now), and he liked the idea of another show up here, so he began talking to L'SAC about leasing the Speedway. From there, it snowballed.

The more people talked, the more it sounded like a reality. Probably because he's seriously considering it, that's why. The IMS management doesn't want L'SAC to flounder or sink, and if it can keep the ship afloat by anchoring another race at its place it'll do it.

Some experts claim the Speedway won't want to compete with the national drags on the Labor Day weekend for fans, motel rooms and gas. Others say there won't be proper police protection. And any of those factors could keep last May's race as the only one run in 1979 at 16th and Georgetown. But don't think the sheriff's office, the National Hot Rod Association or the Daughters of the American Revolution are going to sway the Speedway's decision. You don't tell someone how to play Monopoly when he's got Boardwalk, Park Place and all the money.

RUMORS OF THE Speedway sale have also been making a lot of noise. The latest list of prospective buyers includes the American Broadcasting Company, Holiday Inns of America, Goodyear, the Hyatt-Regency folks and Mr. Foyt once again Eldon Rasmussen sounded in good spirits from Methodist Hospital, where he's recovering from injuries suffered at Pocono. "My right foot (it was broken) still gives me a lot of pressure, but I'm feeling pretty good." said the proprietor of Rent-A-Racer. Eldon said he'd probably be in Methodist for another week or so Roy Hicks and Rohby Black, hospitalized after separate sprint crashes, are both recovering at home at Greens-burg and Bloomington, respectively Roger Larson and Darrell Dawley lost their lives last Saturday night in the weekly sprint show at Knoxville, in a first-lap melee Eddie Leavitt, who ran USAC the past two summers, fractured a vertebra in his back in that tragedy Another ex-L'SAC sprinter, Ronnie Burke, was seriously injured two weeks ago at Dallas There's talk that CART plans to fine Danny Ongais for running USAC's Pocono 500.

Wednesdav night in the $300,000 Forest Hills Invitational. It was the second time in a month McEnroe has had to duel with Pecci, the tough South American. McEnroe won when they played in the final at Queen's Club, just before Wimbledon. It was the first time they had played on clay, the surface on which Pecci is most comfortable. McEnroe, the 20-year-old who already is ranked No 3 in the world, started nervously, missing many first serves but also delivering an ace and a service winner in the first game.

He had two more of each in the opening set. Pecci served three service winners in the same set, serves that would have been aces against most players players without McEnroe's uncanny ability to hit the ball just as it skips off the ground Every game was a struggle McEnroe broke service at 30 for 3-1. It was the only break of the first set. In the second set. neither even had a break point on the other until the 12th game.
