"Some of them think it's too dangerous and others think it's too hard on their equipment." Since it's an invitational race. Hill opted to phone the Hoosier hot shots Butch Wilkerson, Bobby Black, Danny Smith, Mike Johnson and Lee Osborne are a few of the invitees. "We need at least 48 cars to put on the show (there are 24 starters in the first two 33-lappers and the first 12 in each meet in the finale) and if the USAC guys get to run I think we'll have close to 55," stated Hill. Of course whether or not Pancho Co. are allowed to compete, there will be some ex-tremly talented people on hand.

WOO point leader Ronnie Shuman, 78 WOO champ Steve Kinser, Doug Wolfgang, Lealand McSpadden, Eddie Leavitt, Dub May. Bobby Allen, Rick Ferkel and Roger Rager should keep one's attention at 120 miles an hour. And if they don't, good old Ralph Ligouri is also entered. Hill would like to make it clear no wings will be allowed, pit passes for non-participants are $10 and hot laps begin at 4:30 p.m. And in keeping with the way things have been going, the rain date is Sunday afternoon.

THE WOO BOYS open the weekend Friday night at Bloom ington and many of them will TT BEGAN AS A promoters' dream -Athe free-wheeling spirits of the World Of Outlaws vs. the cream of the United States Auto Club in a sprint showdown on the fast dirt of the Indiana State Fairgrounds during the month of May. Strangely enough though, the man who came up with the idea last winter has been met with one cold shoulder after another. Bill Hill, sprint car racing's No. 1 tub thumper, never could have envisioned all the obstacles he'd be faced with when the light went on in his head six months ago.

The race, a trio of 33-lap features, definitely will be Saturday night as scheduled but there may or may not be any of the expected rivalry. FOR STARTERS, there may not be any USAC drivers running because there's a USAC show at Martin (Mich.) Sunday afternoon and two rules blocking their path. The USACers, six in all, have been informed they will not be granted permission to run at the Fairgrounds because it was within 250 miles and 24 hours of the Martin date. However, since everything in the world of speed lately has been settled in the world of law, Pancho Carter got attorney Larry Conrad (the former secretary of state) to seek some legal satisfaction. Pancho, a three-time USAC champion, Bubby Jones, Bruce Walkup, Roy Hicks, Bob East and Junior Parkinson appealed USAC's ruling and will have an answer by noon today.

"There are some things they must do from a legal standpoint," said USAC President Dick King, who recently spent three days and nights in court with CART. "I understand the six drivers must sign an affidavit that says they'll appear at Martin," explained Hill, the media's go-between at Terre Haute and the Fairgrounds. HILL, A FORMER USAC public relations' director who also covers USAC and WOO sprints for the Speed Sport News, thinks USAC is treating Fairgrounds' promoter Don Smith (also a member of the USAC board of directors) "pretty shoddily." "Don has promoted triple 33 USAC sprint races at the Fairgrounds for the past seven years two nights before the Indianapolis 500 and the lastest USAC newsletter (a weekly publication) has one little paragraph about it," continued Hill. "It's like they're trying to tell him 'you don't promote an outlaw race in this USAC town If this situation wasn't enough of a problem. Hill learned this week some of the WOO regulars were staying home.

(UPI) Neil Bonnett, who already has made a name for himself on the stock-car circuit, may not get a chance to prove himself in the Indianapolis 500 because of engine troubles in the experimental car he was hired to drive. Bonnett has turned in practice laps of around 184 miles an hour at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and told UPI in a telephone interview from his suburban Hueytown home the car was capable of 188 and possibly laps averaging 190 miles an hour. Those times would be fast enough to qualify for the 33-car field, but problem is reliability. The team owned by Californian Warner Hodgdon has had internal problems with all three of the experimental, aluminum stock block engines they carried to Indy. THE PROBLEMS KEPT Bonnett from qualifying last weekend and they might prevent him from his final qualifying chance this weekend.

"To be honest, we're not really sure we can get them all sorted out by Indy," Bonnett said. All three engines are in California where technicians are working to repair them and prepare Bonnett for a qualifying run Saturday, the last weekend of qualifying for the 500. "We never really got a full lap in at full speed," said Bonnett, who easily passed his rookie test at the Speedway. "They're working around the clock to fix the engines. Basically, we're ending up doing testing at Indy." IF BONNETT IS unable to run in Indianapolis, he will be back behind the wheel of the Wood Brothers Mercury on May 27 in the NASCAR World 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Bonnett was preparing to travel to Dover, to qualify Friday for his third race behind the wheel of the Wood Brothers car, a ride he was given this season after (he team parted company with longtime driver David Pearson. After qualifying at Dover Friday, Bonnett hopes to be able to qualify the Indy car Saturday and return to Dover Sunday for the race. If he is unable to qualify in Indianapolis, he will be at Charlotte May 27. Want to save money? We challenge you to find a better way.
