'Bama Runs Streak to 13 Volunteers Win the Battle-But Ole Miss Wins the War In 24-0 Romp the ball for 52 plays to Mississippi's 25, gained 195 yards to the Rebels' 50 and had 17 first downs to Ole Miss one. Yet Mississippi won, and it wouldn't be fair to say the victory was totally an injustice. The Rebels got two breaks an interception by Lee Garner that started the 64 yard scoring drive late in the first half and Richardson's recovery of the fumble in the air and capitalized on both. Tennessee was not deserted by Lady Luck. The Vols were the beneficiaries of two penalties that kept them alive when they were trying to tie or go ahead.

But Tennessee jilted the lady, and she bounced right into Mississippi's arms. It was Ole Miss' eighth straight victory over Tennessee. Warren, who set a school one-season total offense record, apparently directed the late touchdown drive with an injured hip because he was hustled off to a hospital immediately after the game. The classy junior gained 214 yards (249 passing and minus 35 rushing) for a season total of 1,359. Hank Lauricella of the 1951 Vols gained 1,233.

jl ii TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) Third-ranked Alabama got its offense rolling long enough yesterday to hammer out an easy 24-0 victory over South Carolina in an intersectional game. It was Alabama's 13th straight victory and marked the eighth loss in nine outings for the Gamecocks of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Alabama now must defeat Auburn in its final game for a share of the Southeastern Conference title with Georgia. Coach Paul Bryant, still trying to find a consistent offensive machine, alternated signal calling between junior lefthander Kenny Stabler and senior Wayne Trimble.

Sophomore Joe Kelley finished out the final moments. Stabler took the Tide on a scoring march after halfback Donnie Sutton returned the opening kickoff 20 yards to the Alabama 43. Nine plays later, Tide halfback David Chatwood bowled across from the one. Trimble relieved Stabler late in the first period and guided the Tide on a scoring drive, climaxed by a three-yard touchdown plunge by fullback Leslie Kelley. In the carpeted locker room of the University of Tennessee football team, there is a large sign, painted in orange and white, that lists the ideals of the Volunteers' defensive team. There are maybe 15 commandments there, most of them cast in this manner: Do not let the enemy keep the ball for more than 12 successive plays never give him enough freedom to run more than 20 yards on one play and absolutely never yield more than 200 yards total offense. These are things coach Doug Dickey has pronounced to be good and conducive to victory. So Tennessee lived up to them against Mississippi yesterday in a Southeastern Conference game. But Mississippi won 14-7.

It was a triumph not richly deserved. In Vols Territory Twice Mississippi moved the ball into Tennessee territory only twice. The Rebels' defense, which statistics say is the best in the conference, let Tennessee roll up 311 yards. In the second half, when Ole Miss was nursing a 7-0 lead it built on a 22-yard pass, from Bruce Newell to Bill Matthews with 24 seconds left in the first half, Tennessee dominated the game. But the Vols couldn't score.

The first time Tennessee got the ball, it went 64 yards to the seven-yard line, but missed a 24-yard field goal try. Neither the Tiger forward wall nor the secondary was able to keep him from plunging through for the needed yardage. Moore tied the score with a 52-yard pass to tailback Hardy King, and the Bulldogs went in front on the second of Bob Etter's three conversions. The game was over at that point for all practical purposes because the Tigers, who had found little difficulty in penetrating Georgia's defenses in the first half, had run finally into an immovable barrier.

But for good measure, the Bulldogs scored again in the final period on a four-yard run by first-string fullback Ronnie Jenkins. at i st i VOL DUMPS REBEL Mississippi wingback Rocky Fleming (81) is upended by Tennessee's Neal McMeans after a short gain in yesterday's game at Knoxville, Tenn. Mississippi won 14-7. AUBURN, Ala. (AP) The Georgia Bulldogs, led by Kirby Moore and Brad Johnson, spotted Auburn two touchdowns yesterday and then fought bak for a 21-13 victory and clinched at least a tie for the Southeastern Conference football championship.

A record crowd of 47.000 shirtsleevcd fans, packed into Cliff Hare Stadium, saw Auburn's Tigers run up a quick 13-point lead the first two times thev got the hall. Until the start of the second half, Georgia could get nowhere against an inspired Tigers pack, fumbling twice deep in Auburn territory. But coach Vincp Vince Dooley Doolcy's Bulldogs, ranked ninth in the nation, began methodically chewing up big holes in the Auburn line from the start of the third quarter. Johnson's punishing onslaught against the crumbling Auburn line finally put Georgia on the scoreboard shortly after haiftime. The 195-pound fullback' broke loose for 25 yards to the Tiger seven and on the next play went in for the score.

(AP) Steve Spurrier and the Florida Gators regained their winning touch yesterday and moved back into the major bowl picture with a 31-10 victory over outmanned Tulane. Spurrier set a Southeastern Conference career offense record as he rolled up 255 yards passing and 33 running.

He covered most of the Gators' yardage via the air routes but didn't throw his 15th touchdown pass of the season Kccord until late in the game after Larry Smith and Graham McKeel both had scored on short runs early. George Grandy gave Florida the clincher. He ran back a punt 83 yards for a touchdown early in the final quarter and the Gators had their eighth victory in nine games with only a Nov. 26 meeting with downstate rival Miami ahead. Tulane gave Florida plenty of trouble Navy's ability to control and advance the ball kept Vanderbilt in poor field position most of the game.

Navy linemen repeatedly dumped Commodore passers for losses. The victory gave Navy a 4-5 record and dropped the Commodores to 1-7. Cartwright completed 13 of 26 attempts for 151 yards. ITI Louisiana State scored quickly behind Sammy Grezaffi's 62-yard opening kickoff return yesterday and plowed on with a relentless ground attack and stubborn defense to hand Mississippi State its fifth straight loss 17-7. The victory in the Southeastern Conference football game snapped a three-game losing streak for LSU. Grezaffi returned the opening kickoff to the Mississippi State 30. Jim Dousay swept left end to the 6. and two plays later dived over from the 3.

LSU increased its lead to 14 0 on a three-yard pass from Fred Havnes to Billy Masters, capping a 55-yard drive in the first period. Steve Daniel added a 36-yard field goal two minutes before the half ended to complete the scoring. Between the field goal and the Tigers' second touchdown, Don Saget, Mississippi State's 6-4. 220-pound quarterback, hit Harland Reed on a 57-yard scoring play. In the third quarter the Vols mounted another drive, this time going 72 yards to the eight-yard line before sputtering to a halt. Minutes later came the game' breaking point. Tennessee had the ball again, and, on quarterback Dewey Warren's passing, moved to within 33 yards of a touchdown with two minutes to play. But when Warren dropped back to pass, he was tackled by Bobo Uzzle and the ball popped into the air. Mississippi's Jerry Richardson grabbed it and sprinted 51 yards for a touchdown.

That made it 14-0 with one minute and 49 seconds left. In that brief time, Warren completed eight passes to take the Volunteers 98 yards to a too-little, too-late touchdown. They scored on a Warren-to-Austin Denny pass from the three-yard line with five seconds to play. The victory was Mississippi's sixth against two loses and gives it a 32 SEC record. It just doesn't make any sense. A great team has been treated unfairly." J.M.P. Louisville It's really simple, friend. All County games count in the over-all race, but only intra-district games count in the district standings. Dear Earl: "Have you seen UL's basketball schedule? Boy, has Peck Hickman been taking lessons from Uncle Adolph.
