Exercises taught during this six week class include: heel on leash, sit, come, down and stay. The instructor will provide assistance to help teach owners how to train their dogs, not train the dogs for you. All owners must have vaccination records with them during the class. Entry deadline: Wednesday. Entry fee: $35 per dog, per session. Dates: Sundays, June 25, July 9, 16, 23,30 and Aug. 6. Time: 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Ages: 16 and older. Dogs must be older than 6 months. Location: Recreation center front parking lot. Limitations: Maximum of 10 dogs. Equipment needed: 4- to 6-foot leash and choke collar. Spanish 101 If you want to learn some basic Spanish, we have just the class for you. We will cover basic Spanish conversation skills that will help you in the business field, your travels or just around the town. Entry deadline: June 28. Entry fee: $15. Date: Thursdays July 11 to Aug. 1. Times: 6:30 to 8 p.m. Ages: 18 and older. Calligraphy Each participant will receive a calligraphy pen along with various handouts and practice sheets. Students will learn the basic strokes, alphabet, numerals and more during the class. Entry deadline: June 28. Entry fee: $10. Dates: Wednesdays July 19,26. Times: 6:30 to 8 p.m. Ages: 16 and older. Cha cha dancing Come join us and learn the basics of cha cha dancing. If time permits we will also learn another dance. This is a great class for the beginner or someone that just needs a refresher class. Entry deadline: June 28. Entry fee: $20 per couple. Dates: Mondays July 10 to 24. Times: 7 to 8:30 p.m. Ages: 18 and older. Adult golf lessons Are you looking for a great activity to do during the summer? If you are, why not learn how to play golf? Entry deadline: June 28. Entry fee: $50. Dates: Tuesdays land Thursdays; July 11 to 27. Times: Session I — 6:15 to 7:15 p.m.; Session II — 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Ages: 18 and older. Location: Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course, 1450 Golf Course Road. Women's drop-in volleyball Offered to any female 18 years of age and older. Drop-in volleyball is held from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the Hays Recreation Center. Cost is $1 per player, night and hour. Noon basketball The old HRC gym at 323 W. 12th is open for basketball from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for players 18 and older. Entry fee is $1 each time you play. Youth activities Mom's morning out Moms and Dads, it's time to drop off your children and have some time for yourself. Children will enjoy the morning doing arts and crafts, playing games, eating snacks and developing social interaction skills with other children. We request that children be able to use the restroom by themselves. Entry deadline: the Wednesday before the event. Dates: Friday, July 7,21, and August 4,11. Entry fee: $5 per time. Times: 9 to 11 a.m. Ages: 3 to 5. Basketball camp The camp will be open to boys and girls in grades first through eighth (2006-2007 school year). Entry deadline: Wednesday. Camp dates: June 26 to 29. Times, grades and fees: 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., grades five to eight, $35; 1 to 2:15 p.m., grades one to four, $25. Location: Hays Recreation Center. Awards: All participants will receive a camp T- shirt. My Fourth Of July T-shirt Now that you have your big fourth of July event planned, let's make your own T-shirt for the event. Youth golf lessons Do you want your son or daughter to learn a great lifetime sport this summer? If so, get them registered for youth golf lessons. Participants will need to bring their own clubs. Adapted day camp Campers in the adapted day camp will participate in gardening, bowling, crafts, kite flying, miniature golf and many other summertime activities. Family activities Enjoying pottery and books This program will start off with a book followed by painting a piece of pottery that relates to the story. Castle Rock adventure The trek begins with an orientation session at Sternberg Museum of Natural History. Learn about rock and fossil collecting, and then try your hand at finding specimens. Each family will provide their own transportation to and from Castle Rock. A sack lunch will be provided for each participant. This class is taught by Cami Liggett, Museum Educator at Sternberg Museum of Natural History, and Susan Schlichting, Kansas State University Research and Extension of Ellis County agent/4-H youth development. Entry deadline: June 28. Entry fee: $6 per participant. Date: Saturday, July 8. Time: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ages: 7 to 10, along with an adult. Location: Sternberg Museum of Natural History. Actively 5 5 Club Activities Estate and Medlcald planning This program is especially designed for those who are over fifty or those who have family members who are over 50. You may attend as many or as few of the sessions as you like. Entry deadline: None. Entry fee: Free. Time: 7 to 8:30 p.m. Location: Hays Recreation Center. Session III: Tuesday: Living Wills. We will discuss living wills and expressing wishes in advance on end of life decisions. Session IV: June 27: Medicaid. Understanding and planning for the layman. We will discuss an overview of Medicaid law pertaining to qualification for benefits, with emphasis on the changes resulting from the Deficit Reduction Act signed into law Feb. 8. Actively 55 mlnature golf This event will be on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month continuing through September. You may attend however many times you would like. Following your round, enjoy a free cup of coffee complements of Precision Valley Golf Center. This event is for anyone 55 years old and up. You will pay the Putt- Putt Course each time you play. Entry fee: $4.50 per round. Dates: Second and fourth Tuesdays of each month through September. Time: 9:30 a.m. Ages: 55 and older. Location: Precision Valley Golf Center, 1500 W. 27th. Wild West trip The HRC will be taking a trip back to the Wild West in Dodge City. We will visit the Boot Hill Museum located on the original site of Boot Hill cemetery. We will also have time to walk Front Street. That evening we'll be treated to an old-fashioned chuck-wagon dinner followed by an Old West gunfight. The night will end at the Long Branch Saloon with a variety show. The show will feature Miss Kitty and other characters from the 1880s. Your chuck-wagon dinner is included in your entry fee. Entry deadline: June 28. Entry fee: $32 Date: July 8. Depart the HRC at 1 p.m. Return around 11:30 p.m. Ages: 55 and older. Playing pitch This program will meet each Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hays Recreation Center. Feel free to bring along your own refreshments and enjoy playing pitch with your friends while making some new ones. This free program is open to anyone 18 and older. Monday night pinochle Dillon's supplies the pop, the Alterra Sterling House will supply the popcorn and the cards. All you have to do is show up. Bring your own partner or come i. alone .and pair up with:someone.... The activity is free, but we will accept donations for supplies. We meet each Monday at the Hays Recreation Center from 7 to 9 p.m. Aquatics Preschool aquatics Experience exploring the water through introduction of swimming skills, songs, games, and fun. One parent must participate in the water with their child. The classes will take place in the zero depth area of the Hays Aquatic Park. Entry deadline: Wednesday. Entry fee: $25. Dates: Mondays, July 3 through July 24. Time: 7:15 to 7:45 p.m. Ages: 4- and 5-year-olds (as of July 1) with an adult. Limitations: Max. 35. Private swim lessons The HRC will offer private swim lessons this summer. All private lesson times will be arranged by you and an instructor. Lessons need to be finished by Aug. 10. Entry deadline: Wednesday. Entry fee: $10 per half hour or $15 per hour. Months: June and July. Time: varies. Ages: all. Season pool passes Individual season passes can be purchased at the Hays Aquatic Park for $35. If you qualify for a scholarship, you must purchase passes at the HRC office. You will be required to sign in and out at the front desk during the designated time for lunch hour lap swim. Entry Fee: $1. Date: Mondays through Fridays. Time: noon to 1 p.m. Evening swim From 4:30 to 7 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays. Admission will be $1.50 per person. Thursday family night From 5 to 7 p.m. every Thursday night bring your family to the Hays Aquatic Park for just a $5 admission fee for the whole family. This includes your immediate family members only. American Red Cross swimming • lessons Red Cross swimming lessons are offered to boys and girls age 5 and older (as of June 1). All lessons are supervised by certified water safety Instructors. Registration fees are $30 per participant, payable at the time of registration. Entry deadline: Session II — Wednesday.
