The other Texan would be SO happy with one that they'd probably have to hold the Victory Lane interview in the Goodyear blimp and he'd probably fly back to Fort Worth non-stop without a plane. John Rutherford Ill is a young man of considerable racing talent. But in the past his racing luck has been so bad that even a born loser like me wouldn't take him to a horse track. Even this year, when he and Mother Nature dealt him the only driver with a shot at 191.632.

But he blew an engine in before the opening of qualifications. while the crew was installing ended his chances of sitting on in a row. And despite the irritations of the first week, Rutherford is wearing the look of a man who is convinced that next year finally has arrived. Rutherford always has been one of the more relaxed and accessible drivers. You got a question, he has the time.

But after Thursday's carburetion tests he was articulate almost to the point of beginning a filibuster. That new McLaren was humming like a sewing machine. Man, it was flat flying. His best lap, 193.4, in full racing trim, had more than a few competitors making strange, choking sounds. "A lot of railbirds don't believe we were running with a racing set-up," said Johnny, "but they sure will race day." San Diego 18 30 .375 (Spillner 0-0).

TEARFUL MOMENT -Harlan Fengler, former chief steward of the 500-Mile Race, wipes away a tear as he was honored yesterday during the driver's meeting at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. (Star Photo) Nonetheless, Johnny will face a few problems when Pat Vidan drops the flag today. Like by the time he crosses the starting line the fellows in the front row will be smoking into the first turn. He also will have to pick his way past a passel of rookies and cars that are more than 10 mph slower than his McLaren. This chore is best accomplished the way porcupines kiss very carefully.

His strategy? "I'm going to drive defensively. I'm only going to go as hard as I can drive safely. There is little sense in wearing out the machine and the man in a dash for the front. "I have a super car the best I've ever had. Even with the little problems it has been a relaxed month for us.

I'm just going to do whatever is comfortable. "I have no doubt that I can win it, and you've got to finish to finish first." Keep an eye on that orange McLaren and the driver with the Lone Star flag on his helmet. He'll be making a run at them before this day is over. Lauda, Regazzoni Pace' Monaco Duo Puts Ferraris On 1st Row Monte Carlo (UPI) Ferraris yesterday grabbed the two positions on the front row of the starting grid for today's Monaco Formula One Grand Prix, an event the Italian machines have not won for the last 19 years. Austria's Niki Lauda posted fastest time Friday, his Ferrari mastering the tricky two-mile circuit in an unofficial record of one minute 26.3 seconds (an average speed of 84.6 miles an hour) LAUDA'S Ferrari teammate, Clay Reg gazzoni of Switerland, joined him at the front with a clocking of 1:266 yesterday. The Ferrari's flat 12-cylinder engine, ideally suited to the slow circuit which winds through the streets of Monte Carlo, will be the Italian ace card in its bid to win here and repeat the 1-2 finish by Lauda and Regazzoni in the Spanish Grand Prix last month. The 78-lap race is scheduled to begin this afternoon.

The winner will be lucky to average 85 m.ph., will change gears more than 2,000 times and will walk away with less than $10,000, which will seem strange to drivers taking part in the today's Indianapolis 500 with its four banked turns, no gear changes and the winner's purse of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Both Lauda and Regazzoni will have excellent chances to capture the lead in the World Drivers' Championship from Emerson Fittipaldi. The Brazilian has been plagued by handling problems in his McLaren throughout practice. He improved his time yesterday by more than a second, but still could manage only 1:28.2, which will put him on the seventh row of the grid. The main threat to the double-barreled Ferrari challenge, according to the practice times, will come from Sweden's Ronnie Petersen.

He clocked identical times Friday and yesterday of 1:26.8 in his John Player Special Lotus, which he i is hoping will prove more l'eliable than it has in four of its five races this season. The Tyrrells of Frenchman Patrick DePailler and South African Jody Schechter did not improve on their times of Friday. The two best performances in yesterday's final qualifying session were put up by Frenchman Jean-Pierre Jarier, who took his Shadow round in 1:27.5, and West Germany's Franz Stuck, who clocked 1:28 0 in his March. Argentina's Carlos Reutemann also improved his time, taking his Brabham round in 1:27.8 to earn a spot on the fourth row of the grid. Both Surtees cars will be doubtful starters.

West Germany's Jochen Mass broke a rear suspension strut and, seconds later, Brazil's Carlos Pace had the engine let go on his car along the pit straightaway. The last time Ferrari won at Monaco was in 1955 when Maurice Trintignant upset the Mercedes of Juan Fangio. Saluki's Win Berth In College Series Minneapolis, Minn. (UPI)Southern Illinois used a barrage of hits, yesterday to beat the Minnesota Golden Gophers 10-2 and 4-3, for the NCAA District 4 title and a berth in the college world series. The Salukis, under coach Richard "Itchy" Jones, tagged Gopher pitchers for 24 hits in the two games.

-John W. Kyle, 75, former Indiana University football captain and later high school coach and athletic director at Gary, died yesterday a Valparaiso nursing home. Kyle was an All-State football and basketball player at Gary Emerson High School. He played two years in the National Football League after college and began a long coaching career in 1922 at Gary Froebel. His 1927 football team was undefeated in nine games and won the mythical state championship.

Except for a two-year interruption in 1932-33, Kyle coached until 1952 and compiled a 93-98-15 record. He became supervisor of physical education for Gary public schools in 1952 and served as athletic director for Gary schools from 1955 until his retirement in 1966. Cincinnati built a 9-0 lead after five innings as Jack Billingham picked up his sixth win in nine decisions. The righthander tired in the seventh with the Reds on top 12-1 and made way for Mike McQueen as San Diego a three-run rally.
