John Rutherford III Is a young man of considerable racing talent. But in the past his racing luck has been so bad that even a born loser like me wouldn't take him to a horse track. Even this year, when he has it all hooked up, Lady Luck and Mother Nature dealt him a pair of deuces.

Johnny was the only driver with a shot at topping Foyt's pole speed of 191.632. But he blew an engine in practice less than two hours before the opening of qualifications. He lost his place in line while the crew was installing a new power plant and rain ended his chances of sitting on the pole for the second year in a row. Last year Johnny established one and four lap qualifying records (199.071, 198.413) but didn't lead that first foot. Several black flags (observers simply refused to believe the car wasn't leaking oil) and a long pit stop dropped him out of the hunt.

He was ninth when the race was halted after 133 laps. But next year always Is the glory time for the true believers. And despite the irritations of the first week, Rutherford is wearing the look of a man who is convinced that next year finally has arrived. Rutherford always has been one of the more relaxed and accessible drivers. You got a question, he has the time.

But after Thursday's carburetion tests he was articulate almost to the point of beginning a filibuster. That new McLaren was humming like a sewing machine. Man, it was flat flying. His best lap, 193.4, in full racing trim, had more than a few competitors making strange, choking sounds. "A lot of railbirds don't believe we were running with a racing set-up," said Johnny, "but they sure will race day." ning single and Cesar Cedeno followed with a three-run Switerland, joined him at the front with a clocking of 1:266 homer, leading the Houston As tros to a 5-1 victory over the yesterday.
