Kupp blocking out Mike Morgan (89), LOONEY SCORES Washington Redskins' fullback Joe Don Looney lowers his head and Lorenzen Wins Race and Argument By DICK FENLON Courier-Journal and Times Staff Wrlttr The University of Louisville's flighty football Cardinals, grounded 9-2 by prohibitive underdog Wichita State Saturday night at Wichita, begin preparing today for another tough assignment. The Cardinals, with a break-even record in six games, meet Kent State and Don Fitzgerald, the nation's leading ground gainer, in their Homecoming game Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Fairgrounds Stadium. Fitzgerald, the Flashes' beefy fullback, ran the ball 37 times for 142 yards in Kent's third win in seven games, a 28-20 triumph ovar Toledo on Saturday. Fitzgerald has gained 966 yards this season.

Louisville quarterback Benny Russell, the nation's total offense leader going into the Wichita game, completed only 11 of 33 passes for 71 yards against the previously winless Shockers. He had a net loss, of 40 yards in 11 runs. Russell, who had suffered a bruised knee in UL's 35-15 win over Marshall the previous Saturday, also was slightly battle in which they swapped the lead 19 times in the first 320 miles. But Petty blew his engine on the 321st mile. Lorenzen's speed was a record for the speedway.

The Bills and the Jets, who now have lost their last three games, are tied for second with 4-3-1 records, one-half game behind the Boston Patriots, who took over first with 4 2-1. Warner's runback and an interception by Buffalo end Roland McDole just 1:22 later turned a tight defensive struggle into a seeming rout. The Bills led 30-3 after three quarters, but the Jets rallied behind Joe Namath, scoring two touchdowns on his passes and another on Bill Baird's 39-yard run-back on an interception.

Field Goal Cushion But Booth Lusteg's fourth field goal of the game a 17-yarder after the first two Jet touchdowns in the fourth quarter provided the Bills with their cushion. Lusteg's other field goals were booted from 36, 10 and 38 yards. Namath completed 24 of 52 passes for a personal high total of 349 yards, but most of that yardage came after the outcome already had been decided. Apart from Jim Turner's 28-yard field goal which gave the Jets a momentary lead in the first quarter, the New York-crs were completely outplayed in the opening half, during which they gained only four yards on the ground. 1 Statistics inn jut First downs '7 Rushing yardage 134 5 Passes 1M0 UU Passing yardage 134 32 Passes intercepted by 5 3 Punts' J-4? 4-44 Pumbles loit 1 Yardi penalized 66 63 BUFFALO 1J 17 3 13 NEW YORK lit 10-JJ NY FG, J.

Pri. 1 Lorenzen won in a record speed of 104.347 miles an hour. "They weighed us before every major race and I don't know why they just didn't weigh us this time with no explanation," Nichels said. A counter protest was filed by John Holman, owner of Lorenzen's vehicle. Holman asked that all of the next four finishers, including White's car, be checked.

An irate Lorenzen said before the decision: "I'm positively sure they won't find anything wrong absolutely, positively sure. I bet $1,000 right now that they won't." He was right. Nance scored two touchdowns on short plunges while gaining 208 yards in 38 carries for his greatest day. Gino Cappelletti accounted for Boston's other points as he took a 24-yard scoring pass from Babe Parilli, booted a 15-yard field goal and added three conversions. The victory boosted the Patriots into the Eastern Division lead over the New York Jets, who bowed to the Buffalo Bills 33-23. at Buechel ROCKINGHAM, N.C. (UPI) Ford driver Fred Lorenzen finished first in the American 500 yesterday and then survived a rigid inspection of his car to determine if it conformed to NASCAR rules to win the stock car race. Ten cars were impounded for inspection by Norris Friel of the National Association for Stock Car Racing following a hassle after the race. "All autos were found legal just as I expected," Friel said. "All parties came out smiling." Ray Nichels, owner of the second place 1966 Dodge piloted by Don White of Keokuk, Iowa, protested against Loren-zen's victory in a John Holman Ford because the cars were not weighed before the race.
