JEFF CHANDLER HARDIN BROWN HUTCHINS DUGGAN PETER WILL FREE! FREE! FREE! BIGGEST FIREWORKS SHOW EVER SUN IN LOUISVILLE! TECHNICOLOR from WARNER BROS. "'Mr. Hobbs Takes A Vacation" is quite an amusing film. It opened at United Artists yesterday, and. despite the fact that its theme is hardly original and its situations predictable, it has enough unique moments to keep one's I 'interest alive.

Roger Hobbs (James Stewart), a successful St. Louis banker, thinks it is high time he and his wife have a vacation together. The wife. Peagy (Maureen O'Hara). has a different I idea.

Feeling the family has been slipping out of their grasp. decides it would be best to take a house by the sea and the children, even the grandchildren, to visit them for a month. "i The seaside house certainly isn't much to look at. It is "a Victorian affair that has been battered by wind and rain and weathered by the spray from the rolling sea. The house has a depressing look lacks in comfort.

Lighting is ancient, from old carbon bulbs. The pump that forces the water to the bath on the second floor is temperamental and operates only when coaxed by an efficient engineer. The Hobbs brood is temperamental, too. The youngest daughter is self-conscious of the braces on her teeth and is having a miserable time until at a yacht club's dance father v- bribes the boys to dance with her. With boys paying her attention at $5 each, the girl soon forgets her dental i- trouble and has a marvelous time.

Son, Father Get Together On Sailing Trip The young son, a television addict, learns to ljnow his father when they go sailing. He impulsively invites dad to watch Westerns with him. The two married daughters have troubles of their own and Hobbs proceeds to straighten them out. Oh, this Hobbs fellow is a great one for family solidity and before you know it everything is sweetness and light. Such things as an eccentric cook, a neighbor who stays on the party-line telephone almost continuously, two strangers are very stuffy, and an anatomical surprise who is very ''friendly, especially with Hobbs, create some situations that amused the audience yesterday a great deal.

"Mr. Hobbs Takes A Vacation" is well-acted by Stewart, as the drawling, witty St. Louis banker who manages to do right well by the family, which he would like to get away from for a while at least. Miss O'Hara is the pretty wife with a will of her own, and Fabian, Lauri Peters, and Michael Burns are rather natural as the teen-agers. Fasbian and Miss Peters sing a song called "Cream Puff" which just may become a hit.

Directed by Henry Koster, the film remains on the bright fide throughout. Terry Wald is the producer.
