Boston Globe BOSTON Endicott Peabody, a former governor of Massachusetts and a longtime leader In Democratic politics, died Tuesday at his home in Hollls, N.H.

He was 77 and had been battling leukemia for more than a year. Known as "Chub," Peabody had three distinctive careers as Massachusetts politician and governor; as franklin, a re-r tired minister of the South Conference of the United Methodist Church, will be at 1 p.m. Dec. 6 In Wright Memo-. rial Chapel of the Franklin United Methodist Com- munity, with calling there from 11 a.m.

Burial will be After retiring, he was a visiting minister at Grace United Methodist Church, Franklin. He also had served as secretary of the board of education of the South Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church for 12 years. The Rev. McMillan was an Army chaplain during World War II. He was a 1926 graduate of DePauw University and a 1929 graduate of Garrett Theological Seminary.

Eva Grigsby had been president of American Legion Auxiliary that year, having failed to get his party's nomination. Two years later, as the underdog, he tried again for the governorship and won, beating his opponent, the Incumbent Republican. John A. Vol-pe, by a narrow margin. He served a two-year term.

1963-1964. losing the 1964 Democratic nomination to then-Lt. Gov. Francis X. BellottI, who eventually lost to Volpe in the general election.

In 1967, President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed Peabody to a post in the Office of Emergency Planning. Peabody moved to Washington, and two years later opened a successful Washington law practice. In the late 1970s, he was the eyes, ears and mouthpiece in Washington for Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier. president-dictator of Haiti.

Most of his work on behalf of the Haitian government was described as behind-the-scenes During World War II. Peabody served as an officer aboard the submarine USS Tirante in the Pacific Theater. He was awarded the Sliver Star for gallantry in action for a mission In which the submarine torpedoed and sank a Japanese freighter, entered a Japanese harbor at night and sank a troop ship, and captured prisoners from enemy fishing vessels. The sub's commanding officer was awarded the Medal of Honor, and the executive officer. Navy Cross recipient Ned Veach.

later wrote the best-seller Run Silent, Run Deep, which was made into a movie. HOMER F. SHORES, 88. Alexandria, died Dec. 4.

Grigsby was a charter member of Alpha Upsllon chapter of Psl Iota XI and had been the sorority's national southern director. She was later named an honorary member of its Beta chapter. Long active In the American Legion Auxiliary, she was a charter member of Its French Lick Unit and was a counselor and later, director of Hoosier Girls State. Mrs. Grigsby served as regent, committee chairwoman and member of the Bloomington chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and was a lifetime member of Its Vice Regents Club.

She was appointed by Gov. Ralph F. Gates to the board of trustees of the Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Home, near West Lafayette. She also was appointed by Gov. George N.

Craig to the Indiana Women's Parole Board, serving 16 years. She was a member of the Monroe County Chapter of the National Society of the Kentucky Colonels. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bloomington Chapter of the DAR for Good Citizens Awards at Monroe County high schools. She was the widow of Floyd H. Grigsby.

He moved to the Granite state in 1983, opened a law office In Nashua and became Involved In state politics, losing a 1986 run for the U.S. Senate. Peabody and his wife, Tonl, married 54 years, had been planning to move to Beacon Hill to be closer to his Boston doctors. Despite his declining health, Peabody remained active, chairing the New England Town Meeting To Ban Land Mines earlier this month.

A Yankee Democrat with liberal political leanings, he began his political career as a governor's councilor In 1955 and 1956. The All-American Harvard football player was a member of one of Massachusetts' most prominent families. A delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1960, he served as a campaign coordinator In West Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire for presidential nominee John F. Kennedy. He also was an unsuccessful candidate for governor DONOVAN W.

PETERS, 80. Indianapolis, died Dec. 3. He was an art teacher at Wood High School, retiring In 1969. He also had been a security guard at the Indianapolis Zoo.
