The adage, "clever these Chinese," never was better demonstrated than yesterday afternoon when the National introduced its "Chinese Follies" to a Louisville audience. A tiny and intimate revue, "Chinese Follies" is but a bit of vaudeville with Oriental trimmings, many of which seem Deaths.

fJ0 mxmr v-'. The two little girls join the Wong Sisters in the chorus work. While not essentially Chinese theater, "Chinese Follies" is quite a pleasant divertisement if vaudeville pleases you. With this revue the National is offering "The Mystery of the Thirteenth Guest," a murder "melodrama concerning "a sealed envelope, an eccentric grandfather, deserted house and -several mysterious murders. Helen Parrish is the girl entrusted with the envelope to be opened on her 21st birthday and Lloyd Ingra-ham is the grandfather.

JOAN BLONDELL, Joan Blonde II Divorces Dick Powell Los Angeles, July 14 OP). Actress Joan Blondell got a divorce in four minutes today from Singer Dick Powell on her testimony that he had been guilty of numerous acts of cruelty, including a demand that she "get the hell out of the house." Powell, whom she married eight years ago aboard a liner en route to New York, told her he didn't care whether she got a divorce or not, Miss Blondell testified. She said he insisted on using their home for his. office, that two telephones were ringing almost constantly, and that she was unable to get any rest or privacy. Powell did not appear to oppose the divorce.

Peter McLaughlin, 35, of 1035 Fehr, was blamed yesterday by a coroner's jury ior the death on June 28 of William O'Dell Martin, 33, bartender at Stoney's Nite Club, 134 E. Jefferson. McLaughlin was arrested after a fight at the night club in which, it is alleged, McLaughlin struck Martin with a club. The jury returned its verdict after Henry Moss, 52, dance hall manager, testified he saw McLaughlin raise the club, used to pound ice, to strike the bartender. Moss said he did not actually see the blow struck, however.

Fatal Mishap Prohrd. The jury also blamed Arthur Jones, 65, Negro, 3432 Kirby, for the death of William Banks. 42, Negro, 3716 Dumesnil, shot to doth on June 21. The shooting occurred In the 1300 block on S. 36th.

In the death of Albert Broyles, 69, of 714 E. Main, the jury found the death car was driven by Dode Williams, 42, of 267 Adams. Broyles was struck on June 23, in the 600 block on E. Main. The car that struck and killed Daisy Cross Likins, 6fl, Caney-ville, at St.

Anthony's Place and Barret Avenue on April 25, was driven by Phil Solinger, 37, 1514 Norris Place, the jury found. Leavell Is Unlikely To Take Balkan Job Dr. Hugh R. Leavell, director of the Louisville and Jefferson County Board of Health, yesterday confirmed the report that he had been asked to take public health emergency job with Neville Miller's Balkan setup of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Council, but said it Is very improbable that he could accept. Transfers of physicians in such instances are governed by the W.M.C.'s procurement and assignment division which 1hus far haa not ben willing to allow the transfer in the light of the shortage of medical help here, it was explained.

3,000 Truckers Awarded Raise. Washington, July 14 (U.R) The War Labor Board trucking panel tonight unanimously awarded a 5-cent hourly wage increase retroactive 'to June 1 for 3,000 employes of 125 Cleveland, Ohio, trucking companies. Clock Jefferson County Statistics to have been Americanized through several generations. Chief entertainer is Peter Chan, whose high voice is very strong and accurate in good imitation of an Irish tenor. He is also master of ceremonies, and while his comedy is not always in the best of taste it is not too low for vaudeville consumption.

He plays the accordion nicely and while he admits any resemblance in his playing to Phil Baker's performance is purely "Occidental," we are dip posed to give him the palm, for we can at least recognize the tunes he plays. We haven't always been able to do this with Baker until he gets thoroughly warmed up. Hand Brats the Eye. An artful magician, named Kim. also is on the bill and he proves again that the hand is quicker than the eye.

Chan, in comment, says that is why so many black eyes are seen. Kim is right quick with his hands, using, of course, a lot of those manufactured tricks which magicians contrive to make illusions harder to solve. Kathryn Lee Chang is the songstress, with her contralto almost of a soprano pitch. She sings three songs of different styles, sentiments and general variety showing her several moods. She seems best, though, in the lively air.

The dance team billed as Mei Lings is very smart and capable and the Wong Sisters are pretty little tricks who also dance well. Two statuesque show girls and two about the sire of figurines serve chiefly as decorations, assuming polite and restful poses. He was 83 years old. A former Kansas newspaper owner and editor, Bristow had been a fourth assistant Postmas ter General from 1897 to 1905. During that time he conducted two investigations into postal frauds, resulting in a reorganization of the United States and Cuban postal systems.

A Republican, Bristow served one term in the United States Senate from 1909 to 1915. Ironically, he was defeated by Charles Curtis, who later became Vice President, in his race for renom-ination in the first primary election held in Kansas after adoption of his popular vote Amendment. Bristow retired from political activity twenty-five years ago. Circus Is Ashed To Post $L000M0 To Resume Tour Hartford, July 14 (U.R) A plan designed to permit the Ringling Brothers 8c Barnum and Bailey Circus to resume its road tour, interrupted here by litigation after a disastrous fire in which 162 spectators were killed, was agreed on today and will be presented to the courts for approval. The plan provides that the circus would furnish security of approximately $1,000,000, an amount paralleling the total of damage suits filed by individuals as a result of the fire.

The plan would dissolve a recently issued Htiperior court order appointing a receiver for the circus and attaching its assets in Hartford. Upkeep of the circus here, including payment of salaries to about 1,000 of its idle employes, is costing $10,000 a day, according to circus officials. 2 Weeks of Chieken Palled On I)uelieH Miami Beach, July 14 (A1) Curtailment of shipments of rationed foods from the United States forced the Duke and Duchess of Windsor on a two-week diet of chicken and more chicken, last summer, the Duchess said here today. Frankfort, July 14 (vT) Two new soil conservation districts were approved today at the first meeting of the State Soil Conservation Committee since its transfer from the Department of Agriculture to the Conservation Department. The transfer was made recently at the request of members of the committee, which was given an increased appropriation of $21,000 a year by the 1944 General Assembly to extend soil conservation work in the state. The old appropriation was $8,000 a year.

43 Districts In Operation. Given approval today were the Brodhead district in Rockcastle County and the McCreary County district. A. M. Hiatt find F.

F. Robbinx were named supervisors in the Brodhead district and Jud-son Harmon and Arlo Barnett were named in the McCrcary district. Forty-three soil conservation districts are now in operation in the state, it was said. Headquarters of the committee will be in Conservation Commissioner Harold A. Browning's office and Miss Roberta Welch, Lexington, has been hired as a full-time secretary.

Ter Diem Raise Deferred. The committee adopted a report favoring establishment of a soil district in Jefferson County covering the whole county except town lots in incorporated towns and cities. A referendum of landowners was set in the county from August 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Action was deferred on a plan to raise the per diem of district supervisors from $2 to $5.
