SECTION 3 AMUSEMENTS THE COURIER-JOURNAL, LOUISVILLE, SUNDAY MORNING, JULY 9, 1914. 11 12 PASSING II Stage arid Screen Bills By BOYD ITw Dr.m. Crltie ft 1 'jr ill Vi Iroquois Amphitheater i -mund Romberg's tuneful operetta, The Student Prince, which opened the seventh season last Monday night, will give its final performance tonight. The lusty music is well sung by Laurel Hurley, Gilbert Russell, Ray Jacquemot, Thomas Corley and others to the accompaniment of an orchestra of almost symphonic qualities as directed by Ficrre de Reedcr. The show is well decorated with Rollo Wayne settings and lavishly costumed from the Shuberts' vast wardrobes.

The attraction for the week beginning tomorrow night will be STRAND Tamara Toumanova, hitherto unknown to the screen but familiar to every ballet patron, enters the LOEWS The story of the man who didn't "belong" is told in "The Hairy Ape," one of Eugene O'Neill's most distinguished dramatic studies which follows "The White Cliffs of Dover." William Bendix, on the right, has the title role. vaudeville from the early days to the opening of Ziegfeld's "Whoopee" and is more or less Cantor's public life. The hero of the film however is impish George Murphy who has a spry and pretty partner in Constance Moore. Joan Davis, who is also in the film, has never been funnier and her gags are the most intelligent she has had in months. Nancy Kelly is a handsome and effective menace.

A NUht of Adventure, on the same bill, is routine mystery stuff but exciting enough for the majority of whodunit addicts. The booking for Thursday is the screen version of Maxwell Anderson's The Eve of St. Mark, in which Anne Baxter and William Eythe have the main parts. Maria Montez in Cobra Woman, in Technicolor, will be the accom-. pany attraction.

Strand The story of Adolf Hitler's rise to power in Germany is convincingly depicted in The Hitler Gang, which is so true to history that it might be considered factual. There is a remarkable resemblance between the actors and the characters they portray and while the action is labored it is generally accurate. A neat little period melodrama called Gambler's Choice is the second attraction, In which Chester Morris, Nancy Kelly and Russell Hayden have the main parts. Thursday's booking-in-chief is Days of Glory, in which the bal lerina, a a a Toumanors, makes her screen debut opposite Gregory Peck, stage actor who made such a hit in "Sons and Soldiers" recently under the direction of the late Max Rein-herdt. National Some soldier boys from Fort Knox are presenting the 'stage show through tonight.

The entertainment goes under the title of Fort Knox G. I. SUrm and is supposed to be typical barracks entertainment. The sho-v is better than many professional ones we have seen at the National since the present poliry went into effect. The screen attraction is WhloperinaT Footstep, a first run, gripping little dram about a bank clerk who was suspected of a series of brutal killings.

Monday through Thursday The Song- of Bernadette will be the single attraction, but cn Friday there will be another stage show. The Chinese Folile. with The Mystery of the Thirteenth Guest as the film feature. Mary Anderson A revival Brother Rat, th military school comedy, is currently showing with another revival bill. The Adventures of Mark Twain, to follow.

Scoop News reels highlighted by the latest March of Time, entitled Back Door to Tokyo, compose the bulk of the factual material on the new program hare. a new v-ascy jruumson picture, uays 1 Av of Glory," which opens Thursday with a strong supporting 'ff, cast headed bv A 1 3 I Katlnka, in which youthful, talented and pretty Miss Hurley will sing the title role. Loew's An admirable screen play has been made of Alice Duer Miller's "The White Cliffs" and under the title of The White Cliffs of Dover it is doing a pretty" good job of cementing Anglo-American relations. Still the film seems a little slow paced and dripping In too much sentiment and patriotic theatricalism. A very fine cast appears in the picture.

It is headed by Irene Dunne, who is very persuasive in simulating several kinds of emotions. C. Aubrey Smith, Frank Morgan, Gladys Cooper, Alan Marshal and Roddy Mc-Dowall are prominent in the action. The first screen version of Eugene O'Neill's psychological LN? ft ri a'S- II today thru wed. drama of the man who didn't called The Hairy Ape, will be the chief attraction following The White Cliffs of Dover.

William Bendix has the title role. Rialto One of the lightest but most entertaining pictures of the week is Show Business, the first picture to be produced by Eddie Cantor, who also appears in the film. Show Business is a story of RIALTO Maria Montez in "Cobra Woman" will not be the principal attraction beginning Thursday because the screen version of "The Eve of St. Mark" tops the bill.
