TV Best Bets MONDAY 9-10 (CBS) — The Comedy Hour Specials, an eight-week series of Phil Silvers and Jack Benny reruns, replaces Danny Thomas and Andy Griffith for the summer. The opener is a very funny spoof of Westerns, originally seen as a Phil Silvers Special in I960, Nat Hiken (Sgt. Bilko and Car 52, Where Are You?) wrote and produced this wild show, which casts Silvers as the West's most yellow man who is made sheriff of Primrose because the townspeople figure no gunsel will jeopardize his reputation by killing a coward. But they reckon without Jack Benny, as Chicken Fins- tenvald, who is even more cowardly—he shoots old ladies in the back, after tripping them. This builds to an hysterical shoot-out. « K • TUESDAY 10:30-11 (NBC) — Report From Warsaw, n-ith Frank Bourgholtzer as correspondent, is a fascinating look at life behind the Iron Curtain. There is a study of the city, rebuilt in the past 18 years, and a look at portions of a recreated 18th century Warsaw. A very effective sequence, showing the natives at the beaches and in the city is highlighted by a fine scene of thousands of Catholics in a Corpus Christi procession. There is * glimpse into government- controlled supermarkets and an explanation of why they are not successful, and finally, an examination of youth, and twisters in a Warsaw night club. ROONE ARLEOS6 Roone Arledge's Travel Book By JOAN CROSBY NEW YORK —Roooe Arledge's mind is like a gigantic bibliob- raphy, covering pertinent and impertinent bits and pieces ot information gleaned from his nearly constant global travelers. As producer of ABC's Wide World of Sports, it's the norm for Roone to be just back from one world capitol and just off for another. "It sounds pretentious," be said ta his office, where OIK hears such lines outside the door as "Art we doing the 80-meter hurdle?." "but it's true that sometimes I wake up and can't quite remember what county I'm in." Perpetual Smile Arledge is i freckle-faced, young man with a crop ot reddish- blond hair and a smile that a perpetual. Except maybe when he is riding in a Japanese tan and the driver is watching a baseball game on a portable television set. "They are bad drivers to start with, and traffic if terrible, and here is this man looking at the television set and saying, 'Ah. so, is very good pray.' That's frightening." Languages can prove difficult. In Czechoslovakia he kept saying "Thank you" in Chechoslovakian, to a clerk in a store, getting no reaction. "Jim McKay was with me, and 1 said to him that the people weren't very friendly, since no one replied. Then we found I was mispronouncing the word." Arledge's biggest headaches usually come from the Russians, •who have a way of pitching change of pace curve balls when least expected. "They usually hold us up until the last minute on visas, but when we finally get there, they couldn't be nicer. The last time we were at Lenin Stadium, I asked if we could have a camera location right on the field. I was told we <xuld, because they never used one there, so there was no apace problem. Then I said I would like one right at the top of the sta- diim, so we could get panoramic views both of the. city and the stadium. They said all right, provided it was a safe location. Set Up Own Camena "The next day, I was told it wouldn't be safe to have a camera on top of the stadium. But I also found, when I went to inspect our camera locations, that they had set up one oi their own cameras right next to every one of ours. And they had even run a cable to the top of the stadium, in case we got an okay to place a camera there. I figure they thought they were giving us something, and even if they didn't want it, they had to take the same thing." Before Roone went on his first European trip, he had a preconceived idea that foreign directors would be artistic and equipment obsolete. "It's just the opposite to wnat I expected. Technically, almost all the countries are ahead of us — it's nothing for them to have 18 cameras set up, all interlocking — but they don't have the personnel to utilize the knowledge."
