ON THE MARKET FRIDAY, JUNE 5, 1998—5 FURNITURE It's time to get rid of that lava lamp finally By SUSAN PRICE Los Angeles Times Syndicate T here's a saying in fashion that if you were old enough to wear it the first time, you're too old to wear it the second time around. It's true of bellbottoms, and it's true for your home decor, as well. If you had a lava lamp when they were first "way cool," you should not still have one. However, if you are young and hip, and view the lava lamp as a parody display in your incredibly trendy retro-hip 50's digs in the Hollywood Hills, you are allowed (by the fashion police) to have one. In fact, it gives you points. For the baby boom generation, buying a sofa was about as big a commitment as marriage, but once they did buy a sofa - and eventually all the rest - things just kind of settled in. Maybe like love handles and saddlebags, they've settled in a little too much and it's time to take a look around and reassess the old Ponderosa. If you're of the World War II parental, now grand-parental generation, you may find yourself still in possession of a "Florida Room" - that lemon- and lime-colored concoction complete with white lattice-work wallpaper and white wrought- iron furniture that is supposed to remind you of sunny climes. Consider it garage sale time. And if you're lucky, you'll sell it all for enough to buy a 21-day advance fare to Miami. While you're at it, you may also discover you've still got that swell harvest gold and avocado green "kitchen of tomorrow," which was "in" when Betty Furness was opening Westinghouse refrigerators on the "Ed Sullivan Show." Time to retire that. And while you're at it, get rid of that foil wallpaper in the foyer and the powder room. The baby boom is not immune to interior design obsolescence, either. Maybe it's time to reassess that Andy Warhol soup- can litho on the wall in the chrome frame - unless it's the real thing. And what about that glass- topped coffee table in the chrome frame, or that classic George Jensen silver candlestick crown? (Hang onto it though; it's a classic.) And do you still have a fon- due pot? Do you realize what fondue does to your cholesterol level? Baby boomers may also find they have a drawer full of Grande Baroque silver (Julie Nixon Eisenhower's choice). That's OK , to keep if you love it, but it does give away nerds aren't immune to obsolescence, either. Not long ago, a trendy Seattle underground publication did a "fashion spread" on the interiors of the young and computer-involved. Bud signs over the bed, souvenir beer mugs, Pepsi Cola sheets, bookcases made of cinder blocks and 2x4's, Grateful Dead See LAVA, Page 10 your spot in the generational march of time. And what about all those silver trivets? However, the Salton hot tray designed to keep buffet entrees warm is on it's way to becoming a valuable antique. So if you haven't tossed it yet, hang on because it's so out, it's almost back in. Gen Xer's and billionaire computer The Time Is NOW For A LOAN! The time is right!
