4—FRIDAY, JUNE 5, 1998 ON THE MARKET FURNITURE Native American artisans create home furnishings By SUSAN PRICE Los Angeles Times Syndicate D esigner Cassandra Lohr has the distinction of being the first decorator ever to have a tepee she designed featured on the cover of Architectural Digest. The 23-foot tepee sits in an open meadow atop an Aspen mountain with a sweeping vista of the valley below. Of course, this was no ordinary tepee; it was the culmination of her years of effort in seeking out and working with the best artisans in the American West. Lohr's quest for the most unique Western artisans began with a designer's dream commission. A Middle Eastern Prince with a Harvard education and a yen for the ultimate in Rocky Mountain living retained her exclusive services with the proviso that she research the best of the West to furnish his exquisite 56,000-square-foot, country-style house and surrounding compound. In the process, Lohr found the artisans and developed the relationships that eventually enabled her to launch "The Old West Collection," a potpourri of the most exquisite Native American- influenced home furnishings, now available through decorator outlets nationwide. The Old West Collection encompasses elegant Western furniture: beds, night stands, desks, armoires and luxurious hand- painted bedding, as well as artifacts and accessories. Everything has the look and quality of master craftsmanship, from the hand- stitched leather blankets to the intricately carved wooden desks that incorporate antlers and copper detailing. Lohr traveled extensively throughout the West for two years locating the best and most original artists and artisans from Mississippi to Arizona. She then worked closely with them to create furnishings and accessories that express a fresh vision of the American West. "I was inspired by their genius at working with wood, leather and antique beads," says Lohr, "and I wanted to develop art, artifacts and accessories that would give their work exposure and engender respect for its authenticity." Lohr explains that she creates new designs, instead of using antiques, "because my clients want contemporary comfort, proportion and beauty that looks as refined as the pieces from the original era. Where can you find an antique king-size bed with hand-stitched, hand-painted Western style linen, much less an antique armoire ready made with TV, stereo and bar?" The pieces, however, are executed in the designs and with the methods that were used to make furniture and accessories in the 18th and 19th centuries. Extraordinary patience and attention to meticulous detail are applied. "One artisan spent over 80 hours sewing a 10-inch square of delicate Native American beading that was used for a throw pillow," she says. "The making of these objects is almost a lost art today," says Lohr, "because people want things ready-made and ready-logo. But manufactured items cannot achieve the beauty and feel of the painstakingly hand-made, one-of-a-kind treasures here. Factories cannot reproduce the colors that paint the Western landscape, the sunsets and canyon- lands, nor the smell of the burnished leather of a well-worn saddle. All senses are affected by the real and authentic, and that's what makes these things such a pleasure to experience."
