No one was injured in the four-car collision. Defending champion Gary Bettenhau-sen of Tinley Park, 111., put the pressure on Unser early in yesterday's race but fell out with a burned piston on the 93rd lap. Art Pollard of Aledford, brought out yesterday's only caution flag when he lost a right front wheel on his STP Special.

That took him out of the race on the 94th lap. Veteran Ruby, two-time winner of the race, took the lead from Unser on the 114th, but Unser regained it on the 121st when he caught Ruby in the back straightaway. Ruby's car had developed rear end problems. Joe Leonard of San Jose, finished fifth. Unser's teammate in Par-nclli Jones' racing stable.

Billy Vuko-vich of Fresno, was sixth; Jim Malloy, Denver, seventh: Bruce Walkup, Downey, eighth; Jim Alac-Elreath, Arlington, ninth, and Gordon Johncock, Hastings, 10th. Despite the delay and the rain, Unser set a Bobby Ball record of 1:48.59. His prize was $10,320 for first place. Ruby picked up $5,965 for second and Dallenbach $3,515 for third. Fifteen of the original 26 cars finished the race.
