D4 THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1997 agsf aim" High School Sports Coordinator Mark Morrow, 633-9111 Hamilton, Boone and Madison staff writer Walter Grable, 816-4426 Hendricks and Morgan staff writer Quwan Spears, 272-4406 Johnson and Shelby staff writer Terry Hutchens, 865-4903 Marion County staff writer Mike Beas, 633-91 13 uMs iMy 1 1 v'l (vJ Tech Freeman might be the best player nobody knows about "I stood back and listened to 14th-year Titan head coach Frank Craig. "He does It everywhere. In the past, Antuwan lived on the 3-pointer, but now he has become a complete player." Aside from his area-best 26.5 scoring average, Freeman leads Tech In rebounds (4.1), steals (2.9), 3-point shooting (48 of 131, .366) and ranks second In assists (2.1). In fact, the only category in which Freeman ranks low Is chatter. Craig laughs when recalling how his eyes nearly doubled In size during the most-recent Cathedral game when Freeman stepped out of character by riding his teammates hard during a timeout.

champion Ben Davis, bombed Lebanon with 38 and Just this past Saturday evening clicked off 22 in Tech's 54-51 victory at Brownsburg. "He's got great range and Is a great offensive threat. As a result, he's very difficult to defend," said Ben Davis coach Steve Witty. "And I thought his teammates did a good Job of getting the ball to him." Freeman's season thus far can best be summed up with one staggering bit of statistical information Freeman's worst game of the season took place in a Dec. 18 loss to Cathedral in which he was limited to 20 points.

Freeman's memory Is as strong as his game. Antuwan," said Craig, "because I agreed with what he was saying." Much too kind to burn bridges. Freeman apologized to his teammates following the game. Not that one was needed. On a squad that's dwindled to nine players due to either injury, personal reason or academic Ineligibility, Freeman carries a lot of weight, as well as much of Tech's statistical load.

"I Just want respect." said Freeman with a smile. "1 don't trash talk on the court, but I have the feeling that 1 can get the job done. I Just try to do something special to make things happen." Maybe Freeman will get the opportunity to do so in June, also. The time elapsed since Tech High School last produced an Indiana All-Star in boys basketball isn't a gap as fej much as it is a 3 canyon. ii- For those curi- "Sn ous, the last Titan Schools Mike Beas player to proudly don the traditional red, white and blue All-Star colors in June was Landon Turner In 1978.

That's 19 years. That's older than Antuwan Freeman. For those unfamiliar with basketball in the city of Indianapolis the city, not the outer reaches of Marion County or suburbs Freeman is a point guard who's living up to his title. He's scoring points and more and more it appears that he can't be guarded. But because he suits up for an IPS program and not a Ben Davis or Jeffersonville, Freeman might be the best player in the state that nobody knows anything about.

This much is known: The 6-foot senior has dribbled into the teeth of every conceivable halfcourt defense this season, be it a 2-3, 3-2 or 1-3-1 zone, a snug man-to-man or a box-and-chaser against some premier defensive programs. Freeman scored 31 points against two-time defending state Another Bradley wrestler dazzles for Beech Grove i By Terry Hutchens STAFF WRITER The Bradley family wrestling legacy at Beech Grove High School has Deen well documented. Steven Bradley went undefeated last year as a sophomore and won state at 119 pounds. This year he's unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in the state at 125, winning his last 75 matches In succession.

Older brother Tim, who graduated last year, compiled a 132-17 record in four years and capped it off with a third-place finish in the state as a senior at 130 pounds. And now come the words that have to make Hornet wrestling opponents shudder at the thought. There's another Bradley in town at Beech Grove. And it was freshman Greg Bradley Wednesday night whowas Instrumental in Beech Grove advancing out of the Manual team wrestling regional and on to next week's semistate. Greg Bradley scored a key fall at 3:18 in the second period over Cathedral's Jamison Herdrich at 135 pounds.

That match and a 4- 9 nvprfimp Hprlelnn hv Rn. seberry at 152 were pivotal in Beech Grove's 37-31 regional semifinal victory over the Irish. They never give up and they just keep on fighting. That's all you can ask for." Greg Bradley's two victories on the evening he also defeated Greenfield Central's Luke Johnson 14-3 In the team regional final were particularly sweet because of what happened at last week's sectional. Bradley lost In the first round to an opponent he had beaten twice before this season. With that loss, Bradley (20-14) failed to advance to this Saturday's individual regionals at Greenfield-Central. There still Is no pool on school grounds, but practically everything else about Roncalli swimming has changed because of a strong Junior rlass led hv Austin Ander- Anderson son.

Anderson, who made a big a Point guard Antuwan Freeman proving he could be another Indiana Al-Star in the making. In a semifinal loss at last week's 58th annual City tournament, the polite young man with the radar fadaway Jumper hit the Irish with a season-high 43 points. A do-it-all player "Antuwan Is probably the best player I've had to date," said to make the final score closer. Against Greenfield-Central, In a rematch of last year's regional final, Beech Grove jumped out to a 27-0 lead after she matches and never looked back. Last year, Beech Grove led 53-0 against the Cougars before losing a match.

What makes Beech Grove's victory even more Impressive was the Hornets were competing without the services of unbeaten Brent Suozzi, the No. 1-ranked wrestler In the state at 140 pounds. Suozzi missed the match because of a times, but I won my events, so I was pretty satisfied," said Anderson, who won the same four events at last year's City Meet and took home three blue ribbons as a freshman. Anderson Is also a two-time sectional champion In the 200 and 500 free, qualifying for state In each event both as a freshman and sophomore. The school records Anderson breaks now are often his own.
